The art of teaching is a book that recently came into my hands and since I got it I can't stop reading it, because it is a corollary of themes that serves as a basis for reflection on our educational practice. Cassany, who is also one of my favourite authors, first offers a review of important everyday aspects of the classroom and, at the same time, from his experience, makes contributions to improve our classroom practice.

#
Each chapter is an opportunity to identify with each description offered by the author and serves as a basis for the development of this and subsequent publications, as I find it interesting to review my educational practice based on the many realities offered in this book. The first chapter is entitled First day of school, a subject that is rarely discussed because it seems uninteresting, but no one notices the importance of the first approach to the classroom, to the students and to the many challenges it presents.

The first day of class every semester is always a challenge for me. No matter how many times it happens in my life, that day always generates a bit of stress. What will the students be like? How many students will I have? What will their intentions, interests and expectations be? What do they expect from me? Will they stay until the end? How do I teach them this semester? All this and more begins to emerge as the first day of classes approaches.

Time has gone by and I handle that stress much better, by dint of trial and error I have learned to breathe, observe and listen to the students to try to approach them in the best way possible. That's why that first class starts early, it starts with planning all the content and activities for each of them. I take that first day of class very seriously, because that is the time when I can put into practice some activities that will lead me to establish how the students are coming along in the area of language.

In another post, a long time ago, I told you that the current situation of the university sector in my country is very bad, to the point where we spent several semesters without student enrolment, so going from having blank class lists to having 3 students enrolled is a sign that anything is possible and that there is a need to study. For this semester, we were also able to find a place to stay. Last semester, we university teachers went round and round to see where we could give classes to the students.

<center>Facade House number 11, Cumaná, Sucre State- Venezuela</center>

This semester we found a place to stay in a house in our old town. Finding it was quite an event, because we all knew that the house existed, but not that it had a number and that it was available for us. I don't really like the space, but, it's what we have and I prefer that to having to teach in a square or in the park. So, well, it's up to me to make the most of the space.
Last Tuesday we met in that house and the experience was a pleasant one. Theoretically there are three protagonists in the story, but only two attended: Karlenys and Maibelin.

Both are recent high school graduates. They still retain traces of a somewhat childish behaviour and from what they told me they are a bit overwhelmed by the change, but the good thing is that they have a strong interest in graduating and that is something I haven't noticed for a long time. At times, I couldn't decipher their faces as I was giving the class and proceeded to ask them if they were following me or ask them to summarise what I was previously explaining.

We made introductions, I gave them my email and phone number. This is a double-edged sword, however, because of the situation we are in now, I think it is necessary. As I said, the house is on loan and the UDO does not have a fixed location and in case of any new developments, it is essential to have a way of communicating with each other. After the introductions, I proceeded to explain some things related to the dynamics of the classes.

That is, the syllabus of the subject (contents), evaluation plan, classroom activities and more. We also had time to laugh, because it turns out that while I was explaining the programme, a song by Juan Gabriel came on at full volume and when we turned to see where it was coming from, we realised that next to House Number 11, there is a funeral parlour. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but that's the way things are and I hope that not all the wakes that will take place between now and the end of the semester will involve music. In my country, wakes are very colourful, they drink, eat a lot, drink a lot and even dance, depending on the life of the deceased.

After that, we went back to class until we finished. We read aloud, we wrote, the students raised their concerns, they took the opportunity to ask me for help with research in another subject. I helped them as much as I could, because they are different subjects, but wherever there is a text to be written or something to be written, I can always help, and that is what I did with them. The day was tiring because I had to deal with several things, but I feel it was fruitful.

This time, my spirits were at the top of my emotional scale, because I noticed the girls' enthusiasm for studying. Their questions, their doubts, their comments about what was happening to them with respect to the university dynamics, made me recover my desire to teach, which had been in decline due to the reality that surrounds us Venezuelans. However, I can say that that first day of school was not only an opportunity to get to know the students, it also meant an emotional escalation in my teaching practice.

<center>Mis estudiantes y yo</center>
