I began my professional career as a University Professor in the midst of crowded classrooms. At a time when students had to wait in lines and get up at dawn to register for their semesters. In those days, the University offered dining services, library, financial aid to students, health services, among others.

Those were good times, although at that time we assumed we deserved more.  It was a time when a middle-class family could buy cars, houses, travel, pay for studies, buy clothes and even invest.

Our salaries were very good. However, now, in Venezuela, our universities show the magnitude of the economic and social erosion we are experiencing. In their classrooms, the absence of students is noticeable.

Little by little, I saw how young people were leaving the classrooms. Many to leave the country in search of a better quality of life. Some found it, others returned crestfallen and regretful.

But they have no desire to return to the classroom. They prefer to dedicate themselves to work or as they say now to reinvent themselves to be able to live, since covering expenses is quite difficult.

In my country, until a few years ago, young people dedicated themselves only to study. There was always one who wanted to support himself, but that was not the reality for everyone. Parents could, not without effort, pay for their children's studies and ensure their professionalization.

However, the reality is different. Our world has changed completely. We have gone from a stable economy to an unpredictable, unstable and fluctuating economy. Subjected to the ravages of the price of the dollar, which by the way, changes twice a day, according to convenience. 

This means that every day everything increases, we buy less, eat less and have less access to quality public services, making it more expensive to live in Venezuela.

Faced with this reality, students must make a decision: study or eat, and they always choose to eat. This leads them to leave the classroom and look for a job in order to help with family or personal expenses. The option of studying in a private institute is forgotten, because, at least in the city where I live, a semester can cost more than 300$, which they cannot afford.

This situation also leads them to stop participating in cultural activities that allow them to cultivate themselves. Young people are immersed in the urgency of satisfying their needs and leave aside their training process.

It is worth noting that as far as cultural activities in my city are concerned, although we try to keep them alive, there is less and less acceptance among the citizens. They are simply not interested.

The cost of living in Venezuela is higher every day and less sustainable for everyone. Above all, for the public worker who only earns 3 dollars a month.

Yes, read that right, 3 dollars a month, with which it is difficult to afford food, transportation, public services and health. The latter is a very sensitive issue, because in my country getting sick is a luxury that not everyone can afford. 

Recently, some friends and I were talking about the cost of living in my country and, between opinions and speculations, we came to the conclusion that we needed to earn about $500 a week, an exaggerated amount perhaps, but everyone has a different dynamic. 

Many have to pay rent that does not go below $100, spend on food and it takes more than $100, cover medical expenses and this is even more expensive. The amount will depend on the severity of the patient, etc...a long, long, etc. Context that we all share: professionals and young people, because we are all being hit by this situation.

In my country, the tradition of training, of moving up in studies, is a thing of the past. There are still people who try, who strive every day to get ahead. Some are more optimistic than others, but there are still people with enthusiasm to face this reality.</div>

For now, here we are and here we will continue....

Comencé mi carrera profesional como Profesora Universitaria en medio de aulas abarrotadas de estudiantes. En una época en la que los estudiantes tenían que hacer colas y levantarse de madrugada para inscribirse en sus semestres. En esos tiempos, la Universidad ofrecía servicio de comedor, biblioteca, ayuda financiera a los estudiantes, servicios de salud, entre otros.

Eran buenos tiempos, aunque en aquella época asumíamos que merecíamos más.  Era una época en la que una familia de clase media podía comprar coches, casas, viajar, pagar los estudios, comprar ropa e incluso invertir. Nuestros salarios eran muy buenos.

Sin embargo, ahora, en Venezuela, nuestras universidades muestran la magnitud del desgaste económico y social que estamos viviendo. En sus aulas se nota la ausencia de estudiantes.

Poco a poco, vi cómo los jóvenes abandonaban las aulas. Muchos para abandonar el país en busca de una mejor calidad de vida. Algunos la encontraron, otros volvieron cabizbajos y arrepentidos. Pero, sin ganas de volver a las aulas. Prefieren dedicarse a trabajar o como dicen ahora a reinventarse para poder vivir, ya que cubrir los gastos es bastante difícil.

En mi país, hasta hace unos años, los jóvenes se dedicaban sólo a estudiar. Siempre había uno que quería mantenerse, pero esa no era la realidad para todos. Los padres podían, no sin esfuerzo, pagar los estudios de sus hijos y asegurar su profesionalización.

Sin embargo, la realidad es diferente. Nuestro mundo ha cambiado completamente. Hemos pasado de una economía estable a una economía imprevisible, inestable y fluctuante. Sometidos a los estragos del precio del dólar, que por cierto, cambia dos veces al día, según la conveniencia. 

Esto significa que cada día todo aumenta, compramos menos, comemos menos y tenemos menos acceso a los servicios públicos de calidad, lo que hace más caro vivir en Venezuela.

Ante esta realidad, los estudiantes deben tomar una decisión: estudiar o comer, y siempre eligen comer. Esto los lleva a dejar las aulas y buscar un trabajo para poder ayudar con los gastos familiares o personales.

La opción de estudiar en un instituto privado queda olvidada, porque, al menos en la ciudad donde vivo, un semestre puede costar más de 300 dólares, lo que no pueden pagar.

Esta situación también les lleva a dejar de participar en actividades culturales que les permitan cultivarse. Los jóvenes están inmersos en la urgencia de satisfacer sus necesidades y dejan de lado su proceso de formación. Cabe destacar que en cuanto a las actividades culturales en mi ciudad, aunque se intenta mantenerlas vivas, cada vez hay menos acogida entre los ciudadanos. Simplemente no les interesa.

El costo de la vida en Venezuela es cada día más alto y menos sostenible para todos. Sobre todo, para el trabajador público que sólo gana 3 dólares al mes.

Sí, léase bien, 3 dólares al mes, con los que es difícil costear la comida, el transporte, los servicios públicos y la salud. Este último es un tema muy delicado, porque en mi país enfermarse es un lujo que no todos pueden permitirse. 

Hace poco, unos amigos y yo hablábamos sobre el costo de la vida en mi país y, entre opiniones y especulaciones, llegamos a la conclusión de que necesitábamos ganar unos 500 dólares a la semana, una cantidad quizás exagerada, pero cada uno tiene una dinámica diferente. 

Muchos tienen que pagar un alquiler que no baja de 100$, gastar en comida y se necesita más de 100$, cubrir los gastos médicos y esto es aún más caro. La cantidad dependerá de la gravedad del paciente, etc... un largo, largo, etc. Contexto que compartimos todos: profesionales y jóvenes, porque todos estamos siendo golpeados por esta situación.

En mi país, la tradición de formarse, de ascender en los estudios, es cosa del pasado. Todavía hay gente que lo intenta, que se esfuerza cada día por salir adelante. Algunos son más optimistas que otros, pero todavía hay gente con entusiasmo para afrontar esta realidad.</div> 

Por ahora, aquí estamos y aquí seguiremos....
