Today I will talk about an unusual experiment for me, associated with the painting on fabric.

The fact that I had never painted on fabric, but recently a good lady brought me a roll curtain, which is very much asked to paint some landscape. What can I do, to refuse the ladies because I'm not used to.

The complexity of the work was as follows: the curtain, though was made of fabric, but not simple. The fabric itself was a synthetic fabric, imprinted in a dense synthetic substrate, and I initially decided that it is completely waterproof. Another nuance was that the paint should not have given volume, because the curtain will be twisted every time, and it is not a matter if it becomes deformed due to the applied pattern.

Later, after trying different options, and consulting with our esteemed @alisaroma, I decided that the best way to paint on this basis would be acrylic paint on fabric. I had to create in watercolor technique in wet way.

Buying paint, I began to pick up tools and related materials. At first I thought that I could use here is a palette, and even a large squirrel and goat brushes.

Then I got bubbles for dilution of paint thinner and began to think how to be with the curtain. Because it is a huge meter thirty to forty meter value. Decided to settle down directly on a floor as initially liquid paint will have to spread evenly on a wet surface.

The customer asked for something soft, calm, light colors. Jointly chosen for the sample landscape in classical Chinese technique. It was good for me, because the paint layer is important here, I did not want to overdo it.

Taking the sprayer and pre-induced to prepare a liquid caramel, I soaked the curtain. It took me about a liter of water. After the paint is evenly absorbed, I began to apply the first light transparent colorful layers.

To my surprise, even large squirrel brushes here are not particularly good. At least not at this initial stage. With joy I suddenly found that for the main divorce is perfect ordinary paint brush with long bristles. I painted it to her in the same way as if I had done it on wet watercolor paper.

In the course I realized another important point: small jars with color, too, is not good. They will need me later, when I get a smaller brush to work out the details of the picture. Typing in the kitchen half-liter jars, I brought them liquid paint and enthusiastically set to work.

The entire initial process was no different from working with watercolor. In the same way, I applied large details, which are beautifully spread on an improvised canvas. The only difference from watercolor technique here was that I actively used white. In the picture, the fog on the horizon and in the spurs of the rocks, as well as part of the river, were white.

I temporarily finished drawing on this. Now it was necessary to wait until the moisture and paint dries. Then I will need to work on a dry basis.

Only the next day I made sure that the curtain stopped carrying moisture. And then I hung it right over the sideboard in the hall and continued to draw. Now I do not need to have induced in large banks liquid color, and I removed away and paint brush, starting to draw smaller brushes.

To my joy, with further drawing, even thicker paint was perfectly absorbed and beautifully spread over the fabric. It had no thickness, the curtain perfectly absorbed the color layer by layer. Just had to make sure that she is not too tech down, now my picture is hanging vertically. Here I just came in handy squirrel and goat brushes that I have prepared in the beginning. They I began to draw the details of the crowns of trees and rock crevices.

Then everything is the same as when drawing with watercolor. I changed the brushes to more subtle ones as I moved to the fine details of the composition. It is important to have patience and you can not hurry, because there is a great risk to spoil the work started. Unlike paper, we do not correct errors in the picture, because we work on the fabric, and it is porous.

At the very end I draw a boat on the river, small figures of people and houses on the top of the hill. This creates the right proportionality of forms, so that the viewer has a clear understanding of what is big and what is small in our picture. Now you have to dry everything properly and you can take the work.

The picture came to mind of the customer. In parting words, I advised you to gently iron the curtains with an iron, but at a very low temperature and with a sprinkler. With the paint from moisture now nothing will happen, because it is well absorbed into the fabric and dried. But if it is strongly overheated, it is possible to melt the synthetic base.
