- Türk hikayelerinde anlatılan yaşayan ölülere denir.

- Amerikan zombilerine benzer ama onlara göre daha sosyal varlıklardır. Sırtlarında tabutları ile sokaklarda gezdikleri söylenir.

- Eski Türklerin inançlarına göre savaş dışında kendi kendine eceliyle veya yaşlılıkla ölen kişilerin ruhları tanrı tarafından cennete kabul edilmez ve dünyada bırakılırmış. İşte dünyada kalmış olan bu ruhlar bedenlerine geri döner ve hortlak olarak yaşarmış.

- Eski Türk inanışına göre gece olduğunda mezarlarından çıkan ve kefenleri ile ortalıkta dolaşan yaşayan ölülerdir. Ölmeden önce kızgın oldukları kimselere musallat olurlar, bir at kadar hızlı koşabilirler, silah kullanabilirler, istedikleri insanı döverler sevdiklerini ise kaçırırlar.

- Anadolu kültürel inanışına göre ahiretten kovulan ölülerin dirilerek mezardan çıkmasına hortlamak denir. Hortlayan kişide hortlak oluyor.<hr/><center>
