COMPREHENSION: The Broken Teacup
It was a hot afternoon and Susan could not sleep. She slipped out of bed and crept to her grandparent’s room. She peeped inside. Grandfather was snoring gently. Grandmother lay on her side. She, too, was fast asleep.
The afternoon did not seem to end. Susan had nothing to do. She went to the garden.

Looking beyond the hedge, Susan saw a little girl around the corner of the house. Susan called her across. The girl smiled and came to Susan. “What’s your name Susan asked. “Alice,” the girl said “where do you live ?” “down the road,” Alice replied…
”will you come and play with me,” Susan asked, happy to have someone to play with. “oh yes!” said Alice.
The two girls went into the house quietly. Susan got out her doll and soon the two girls were busy playing and giggling to themselves. Susan could hear Grandfather’s snores. Then suddenly there was silence.

”oh! I think we’ve disturbed them!” Susan spoke softly. Quickly, the two girls picked up the doll and ran upstairs to the attic, where they would not disturb anyone. Alice looked at Susan and said, “what shall we do now?”
the room was full of trunks and boxes. Susan had often looked inside them in the afternoons.
One day, she had found a lovely toy tea set. When she had asked her grandmother about it, she said “it belongs to your cousin Judy. She used to play with it when she was a little girl. Of course, she is grown up now, and married… then Grandmother had added “You mustn’t touch it, Susan. You might break it.”

”come on, Alice,” Susan said. “I’ll show you something that is very nice.” she went straight to the box with the tea set. Opening the flap, she got out the tea set. Alice grew big with excitement.
“Oh,” she gasped. “it’ beautiful.” she held a cup in one hand and ran her fingers around it.
Just then Susan heard Grandmother's voice outside.
“Quickly put it back,” she whispered to Alice. Alice picked up the pieces of the tea set and began to hand them to Susan to put back in the box. In the hurry, one of the cups slipped out of Susan’s hand and fell with a crash! It lay on the floor in pieces.
For several seconds, they just looked at the broken teacup. Then Alice picked up the pieces and put them back into the box. After they both girls left the room.

“Susan, where have you been? Who is this?” Grandmother exclaimed as the girls went to Susan’s room. Susan was very scared.
“This is Alice,” she said, “We were playing in the attic.” “Go and wash up, Susan,” Grandmother said, as Alice said goodbye and left. Judy has come to visit us and has only brought her little baby!”
Judy had come! And Susan had just broken Judy’s beautiful teacup. How would she face her?
“Susan, where have you been said Judy, as she entered Susan’s room. She had come to see why her little cousin was taking so long.
Susan looked up with tearful eyes. “Susan!” Judy bent down and hugged her. don’t cry, what’s wrong? “she said”. come, I’ve brought my little baby. don’t you want to see her?”
Susan nodded tearfully. “come then, wash your face.” while Susan was washing her face, Judy wandered into the attic. She returned carrying the box with the tea set.
“Susan, look! Have you seen this? I used to play with this tea set when I was a little girl. I had forgotten all about it! Would you like to have it?”
Susan felt very bad and took the broken cup to show to her cousin. She told Judy about how it broke and started crying again. Without a word, Judy simply gave her little cousin a big warm huge.
