I've been thinking along these same lines, but through the use of game theoretical incentives that encourage people to play by the rules instead of cheat. Bitcoin has this built into the protocol and it's called "proof of work". The idea is that in order to participate one has to invest energy or resources and if you cheat, there's a high probability you'll lose those resources. There's also variations on proof of stake where you stake something in order to participate. You might want to study the [Byzantine General's problem](https://medium.com/all-things-ledger/the-byzantine-generals-problem-168553f31480) which is rooted in the idea of a conflict between generals deciding to attack a city or not. They reached consensus with the use of authority which of course is why we have our present corrupt system. If we could extrapolate principles from this to allow for no authority similar to bitcoin, but without the use of panoptical technology... What is it that incentivizes us toward good behavior? Up until now, basic moral, ethical principles, compassion but also fear of death. Authority relies on the last one more so these days. It seems that increases in technology have led to a worsening of all of these situations.

Excellent reference to the Byzantine Generals problem @zoidsoft. This concept should inform all such forays into the subject at hand.

Satoshi solved this problem by inverting control away from central authority and placing it back into the hands of all participants without any one of them being able to assert selfish control. So the answer seems to come back to leveraging the power of community to combat abuse by singular selfish forces. I'm not sure how one accomplishes this in a system where we've already opted in (nature). Bitcoin requires you to explicitly opt in and you risk your investment in hardware and energy to try to cheat. Nature's answer seems to be the requirement of enlightenment to understand the damage to the commons and the weak point is a few bad actors can ruin it for everyone.

In a natural commons, the risk is that nature cannot keep up with reproduction to replace what is used. However, in the steem commons, it could be completely depleted and the algorithms will continue to replenish the steem. So it won't ever go away. The arguments being made about the rape of the reward pool is geared towards a single individual taking too much and the risk is that they grow so big that they can then end up taking the whole reward pool. However, this argument falls apart when you end up with millions of people on the platform. So while a few bad actors can profit heavily, the commons cannot be ruined unless the platform itself is abandoned by the users. So the economics are somewhat different than what is found in nature.
