Sometimes, the decisions we make in our lives not only define us as people, they can also leave their mark on others, either for better or for worse. Perhaps that is why it is so difficult to make certain decisions.

As most of you know, I have a cake and dessert business and since I started in this field, I have had to make important decisions; because it depends on this whether the customer comes back or not. Therefore, it is better to make the right decision because in recent times competition is strong and often even unfair, because many bakers especially those with little experience, give away their time and work selling cheaper in order to get more customers. But, well, that is another topic that I may tell you about someday.

Como la mayoría de ustedes saben tengo un emprendimiento de tortas y postres y desde que empecé en este rubro se me han presentado situaciones en las que he tenido que tomar importantes decisiones; pues de esto depende que el cliente regrese o no. Por lo tanto, más vale tomar la decisión correcta porque en estos últimos tiempos la competencia es fuerte y muchas veces hasta desleal, debido a que muchas reposteras o reposteros, especialmente los que tienen poca experiencia, regalan su tiempo y su trabajo vendiendo más barato con tal de obtener más clientes. Pero, bueno, ese es otro tema del que tal vez algún día les cuente.

For me it is crucial that clients feel well taken care of during the whole process; from the moment they quote the cake until the end, which is when they eat it. The goal is to make happy that person who is depositing all their trust and money in our work. With this in mind, I am that entrepreneur who likes to give a little more in her business, because since I started this challenge of entrepreneurship I decided that I would serve my customers as I would like to be served myself.

Para mí es crucial que los clientes se sientan bien atendidos durante todo el proceso; desde que cotizan la torta hasta el final, que es cuando se la comen. To prevent any drawbacks and to get a better idea of what the client has in mind, I usually ask for a reference image. However, when I asked the client for such an image, she told me very affectionately: "Do it the way you make them!" "Just give it"! Obviously, this gave me full creative freedom.

Para prevenir cualquier inconveniente y tener una mejor idea de lo que el cliente tiene en mente, acostumbro a pedir una imagen de referencia. Sin embargo, al solicitar dicha imagen a la cliente, ella me dijo muy cariñosamente: “Hágala así, como usted las hace!” “Dele no más”! Obviamente, esto me dio plena libertad creativa.

So, I got to work and made the cake, but when I finished decorating it, I didn't like the result. It looked like an ordinary supermarket cake! I felt that I didn't have my mark on it, that I wasn't giving the best of my talent. And it was at this point that I felt the need to make a transcendental decision. A decision that would eventually makes the difference.  Do it well or to do it great? So, I listened to my heart and took the second option.

Entonces, me puse manos a la obra e hice la torta, pero cuando terminé con la decoración, no me gustó el resultado. Me parecía una vulgar torta de supermercado! Sentía que no tenía estampada mi huella, que no estaba dando lo mejor de mi talento. Y fue en este punto cuando me surgió la necesidad de tomar una decisión trascendental. Una decisión que, en definitiva, haría la diferencia. ¿Hacerlo bien o hacerlo extraordinario?. Así que escuche mi corazón y tomé la segunda opción.

Now, to raise the level of the cake I thought of making a beautiful flower with rice paper, an element that according to my criteria would make the cake look more elegant and with a touch of glamour. However, this was not so easy because I had some difficulties at the time of making the change and I was about to ruin the cake decoration several times, but I was determined to do it and nothing and no one was going to stop me! And my friends, I tell you that almost always making the decision to upgrade any design can result in complete failure. But, I still took the risk and did it. And I won't deny that this kind of action generates some fear in me, but it's worse not to do it and be left with the uncertainty.

Ahora bien, para elevar el nivel de la torta se me ocurrió hacer una hermosa flor con papel de arroz, elemento que según mi criterio haría que la torta se viera más elegante y con un toque de glamour. Sin embargo, esto no fue tan fácil porque se me presentaron algunas dificultades en el momento de hacer el cambio y estuve a punto de arruinar el decorado de la torta varias veces, pero estaba decidida a hacerlo y nada ni nadie me iba a detener! Y amigos míos, les digo que casi siempre tomar la decisión de mejorar cualquier creación, puede resultar en un completo fracaso. Pero, aun así me arriesgué y lo hice. Y no les negaré que este tipo de acciones me generan cierto miedo, pero es peor no hacerlo y quedarse con la incertidumbre.
