Data monetization wasn't the only issue I was considering but it seems from the post linked above by @gavvet that the developers might be looking at the issues of decentralisation and reputation. New years day will be interesting!

Data (= information) monetization is the issue that Wikipedia has. And not just them. A few hundred millions of other data providers have that issue, too.

They also have an issue of who is allowed to provide this information and make edits. When it began anybody could remove or edit data from Wikipedia. When certain corners of the pedia became a constant battle between contradictory views that changed. Also, in its current model the steem blockchain would allow the whales to decide on the truth. This is also no real solution and so as @pfunk said in his comment, there would likely need to be some changes to accommodate a reliable wikipedia on the blockchain.
