Method to the madness

I went to an exhibition in East Van which was held at an artist building which is to be torn down in 2 weeks. It was my first time in that gallery but many of the people attending were feeling nostalgic as the show marked the end of an era. To be perfectly honest I had a hard time finding a common thread in the work presented. My friend Olga had been to another vernissage from the same collective and told me there was a method to the madness. I was extremely happy to socialize with the people there who were dressed in original clothes and were very approachable.

I just had to take a picture with Sophie because of her amazing punk style. I like it, it’s edgy and doesn’t leave you indifferent.

The bar was by donation and the bottle of absinthe had quite a few takers. The bar tender would slowly melt a cube of sugar into your drink with that amazing device.

This is an artist space next door to the exhibition. I bet this artist is going to be sad to loose their studio. I can only dream of having one like that!

This is a group selfie with my friend Olga surrounded by purple dots. She is literally using my hair to hide her face, funny girl. To the left we can see a Zumba instructor who I have met before at a community centre. She was the one to recognize me.

You can tell the festive atmosphere in the room that night. Like one big art family! It was nice to se everyone connect like that.

This is my friend Grace Fournier, her boyfriend Max and another friend. We went for drinks after and then again to dance to some techno in an after hour. It had been a while and I had lots of fun.

This DJ was playing in a room connected to the gallery. We went to check it out for a bit.

3 female DJs were playing at the after-hour we went to which was a welcome change. The music was upbeat and very good ranging from techno to progressive psy-trance which is much more minimal than regular psy-trance. I danced until my feet were hurting.

I walked half of the way back before I hopped on my bike and encountered this funky herb garden. I rarely get the opportunity to take photos in the early morning light. I also found 20$ on the ground.

I was almost home when I saw this totalled car which reeked of burned rubber. What happened here?

Even though this was not art at it’s most elevated, I was such a worthwhile event to meet new people. My only serious criticism is that most of the works were hanging to high on the walls and the biggest downside is that it makes them unnaccessible to short people. I also liked how one thing led to another and I ended up going to bed at 7 AM, especially since I am starting a new job next weekend taking care of an autistic young adult which will make it even harder to party.

Wow, what a night! Quite funny how one extreme thing leads to another, although they seem completely without connection. That herb garden and the totalled car sort of suggest each other. Imagine what could happen to it if you just left it there... Would it host a garden one day? Could it be that the herb planter started out like that? Is that maybe the method to the madness?

I love your comment, it’s so inspiring. I do love those rare nights where one thing leads to another. The connection between the two vehicles may be serendipitous to us but perhaps not to the owner of that Van. 

When humans are gone all vehicles will become gardens.
