It's a bugger of a thing as it affects everyone around. The people suffering are sometimes oblivious to it, but also sometimes can *know* what's going on which can also make it worse. Up to a while ago my dad knew he was forgetting things now he doesn't apologize for forgetting...It's advancing. 

Seems like you had a colourful upbringing. The good thing is you made it, and you show the respect for the person who raised you. That's commendable.
