―Este es el tipo de situaciones en las que siempre nos metemos por tu culpa ―dijo Virginia, que caminada rápidamente por el pasto con una expresión de frustración en su rostro.

―Ya te dije que no fue mi culpa que el reactor de antimateria se haya agotado ―respondió Isaías, mientras trataba de seguirle el paso, a la vez que arrastraba, con un pequeño montacargas manual un gran contenedor metálico.

―Claro que es tu culpa, es tu responsabilidad como piloto revisar que se cumplieran todos los ítems de chequeo de la nave, antes de salir del puerto de Dione ―replicó ella, dándose vuelta y mirándolo con su rostro enrojecido por la ira.

―Las revisiones de servicio, las hace la autoridad de ingeniería del puerto, no yo, sólo me encargo de recibir los resultados de la evaluación ―respondió Isaías, deteniéndose al ver la expresión de Virginia ―. Sólo verifico que todo haya estado conforme y si hay recomendaciones o advertencias, se las comunico al taller para que realicen los trabajos correspondientes; y no había nada que hacer, según el informe de ingeniería…

―Ya cállate, no quiero seguir escuchando tus excusas ―respondió ella, dándose vuelta y continuando su andar colina arriba.

Mientras viajaban en dirección al sistema de Palas, Virginia, astro biólogo de la división de ingeniería ambiental e Isaías, su piloto, debieron abandonar su nave, pues el reactor de antimateria repentinamente se agotó así que, en una cápsula de escape, tuvieron que dirigirse a la luna en proceso de terraformación de un planeta gigante, para resguardarse mientras recibían ayuda.

Descendieron siguiendo la señal del faro del nodo principal de la red de terraformación, con intensión de resguardarse en él. Ahora, después que dejar la cápsula al pie de una colina sobre la que se encontraba el nodo, caminaban a toda prisa, mientras empezaba rápidamente a oscurecer al ponerse la gigantesca silueta del planeta por entre las colinas situadas al este de donde estaban.

Sobre la colina, con uno de sus lados sumido en la más profunda oscuridad, mientras que el otro era levemente iluminado por la tenue luz ámbar reflejada por el ya casi oculto planeta, se encontraba el nodo, un edificio, completamente solo, sin ningún tipo de iluminación y casi completamente cerrado, con la excepción de un sector destinado a servir de alojamiento a los Ingenieros ambientales que por razones de trabajo necesiten resguardarse en él mientras completan sus tareas.

Tras cinco días de esperar a ser rescatados, decidieron tratar de entrar a la sala central del nodo para procurar enviar un mensaje a través del satélite de mensajes que orbitaba la luna. Tras pedir autorización a la IA de terraformación consiguieron acceder por el panel exterior al sistema de comunicaciones de emergencia.

―Por favor, LUCY envía el mensaje a través del satélite de mensajería a la estación de relevo más cercana ―dijo Isaías, después de grabar un mensaje explicando la situación y solicitando ser rescatados.

Después de varios minutos sin respuesta de la LUCY, un código de error apareció en la pantalla del panel.

―No es posible emitir el mensaje, el satélite parece estar fuera de línea ―dijo LUCY ―tal parece que su batería de radio se ha agotado.

―Como que se agotó su batería, ¿hace cuanto tiempo que este planeta no es visitado por los ingenieros ambientales? ―preguntó Isaías.

―La trasformación de este planeta fue suspendida hace dos mil trescientos cuatro años ― dijo LUCY ―. La próxima revisión de parámetros será realizada cuando se cumplan los dos mil quinientos años, cuando se verificará si se reanuda o se aplaza por otro periodo de tiempo igual.

―Maldición, ¿cómo es posible?, bueno tendremos que aguardar a que reciban la señal de nuestro radio faro ―dijo Isaías, dándose vuelta para ver a Virginia.

―Entonces tendremos que seguir esperando, ¿Cuánto tardará en ser recibida la señal? ―pregunto ella.

―Bien, la estación relevadora está a veinte días luz de aquí más o menos, de ahí debería ser retrasmitida en un paquete de datos a través del puente al servicio de emergencia más próximo tal vez diez o veinte días más y después de eso, el tiempo que tarde en venir la nave de rescate, como tres o cuatro días más, deben ser no más cincuenta días, cuarenta y cinco descontando los cinco que ya tenemos aquí ―explicó Isaías.

―Maldición cuarenta y cinco días más de espera. ¿Qué haremos mientras tanto? ―preguntó Virginia.

―Abarca más allá de los cinco satélites, casi hasta el cinturón de asteroides ―respondió LUCY.

After five days of waiting to be rescued, they decided to try to enter the central room of the node to try to send a message through the satellite messages orbiting the moon. After requesting authorization from the IA of terraformation, they were able to access the emergency communications system through the external panel.
