It is interesting to see how some simple concepts that have outlasted their usefulness in big Hollywood projects can still function in the world of low budget cinema. Perhaps it could be explained with low budget film makers having a tad more creative freedom and giving some of those concepts original treatments. One of such concepts is "buddy buddy" film, used in *Hits!*, 1994 thriller directed by William R. Greenblatt.
The plot begins with the theft of bag which is very important to mob boss Vinny (played by Victor Arnold). His assistant Kelly (played by Martin Sheen) is forced to act quickly when he hears unreliable information about bag's whereabouts and people suspected of stealing it. He must set-up surveillance so he recruits two men from the bottom of mob hierarchy. Dommy (played by James Marshall) is young wannabe gangster who tries to act tough, while Mickey (played by Jeff Monahan) is complete amateur, brought as
replacement for deceased brother who was more experienced in life of crime. Two of them are given orders to follow suspects and immediately report if they see the bag.
"Buddy buddy" motive, which was so overused in police films, is here brought into criminal underworld. Actor and screenwriter Jeff Monahan also brings another spin to usual crime plots by showing the events from the perspective of small-time hoods – the very same people who usually serve as faceless cannon fodder in big budget crime films. Monahan paints very convincing and, at times, quite moving picture and his characters are portrayed as ordinary people with hopes, dreams and fears. The script also keeps our attention because the audience, just like characters, don't have any idea what it is in the bag and what this affair is all about. The good script is, however, slightly undermined by not so inspired direction, low budget and the ending that seems forced. On the other hand, *Hits!* has some good acting and in general it could hardly be viewed as cinematic miss.
