Many researchers have remained puzzled over the various mysteries of Stonehenge. This monument took builders an estimate of about 1,500 years to complete. The Stonehenge is located in southern England, the Stonehenge is surrounded by roughly 100 massive stones standing upright and it is placed in a circular layout.
While some scholars have agree that Stonehenge was once a burial ground, others have discovered some interesting facts about the famous STONEHENGE. One shocking thing about this monument is how a civilization without modern technology or even wheels to move the rocks 120 miles, while the sandstone that consists of its outer ring hail from local quarries, researchers and scientists have traced the bluestones that make up its inner circle from the Preseli Hills in Wales, from 200 miles away from where Stonehenge sits on Salisbury Plain.

We talked about how it was used as a burial place, until people stopped and started burying them in ditches around the periphery of the Stonehenge site. Here we'll be reviewing two of the theories, stay with me.
**STONEHENGE WAS A GIANT ASTRONOMICAL CALENDAR**
This second theory makes reference to Stonehenge’s alignment with the moon, sun and stars. Researchers have conducted their search and concluded that the standing bluestones at Stonehenge were carefully placed in specific positions based on old astronomical knowledge.
Researchers studied Stonehenge, and other stone formations within the UK, and came to the conclusion that Stonehenge was probably built to monitor the movement of the moon, sun and stars many years ago. An analysis of the position of the structures, compared with popular astronomical alignments, has proven a strong association with the movements of the moon and sun in particular.

**STONEHENGE WAS A PLACE OF SPIRITUAL HEALING**
This theory was formulated by two world-renowned experts from Britain, they are by name Professors Geoff Wainwright and Timothy Darvill. Their theory suggest that the monument was a site for healing and pilgrimage.
According to this school of thought, the smaller stones at the middle of the circle are the main point to this theory and the purpose of Stonehenge. These bluestones were brought from about 180 miles from the southwest Wales mountains of to the site at Stonehenge using the ancient technology.
The two renowned experts Pro Darvill and Wainwright argue that this massive uprooting massive required a lot of effort and considerable resources; the level of input made to drag the bluestone 120 miles, have been possible because there's a very good reason for such a monumental undertaking. According to them, that act was motivated by the supposed healing powers of the stones as a result of their proximity to traditional healing springs.
The small chippings that were carved out of the bluestone rocks found during there digs were used to produce amulets, this suggested the alignment of the rocks with protective and healing properties. Their research, suggests this practice continued into the Medieval period, from generation to generation.
**CONCLUSION.**
According to what we've read, there are various competing theories as to why Stonehenge was built. Obviously, the site may have been used for various purposes over the past millennia and it's still standing. So, we can't assume that one theory is more valid than the other.
Perhaps rather than viewing the Stonehenge’s purpose as a particular function, we should consider how its purpose varied over time through centuries and was dependant on societal shifts.
