| body | "Schrödingers Katze ist ein Gedankenexperiment von Erwin Schrödinger, einem der Begründer der Quanten-Physik, das er gegenüber Albert Einstein formulierte, um seine Skepsis gegenüber der damaligen Anschauung zum Ausdruck zu bringen, dass sich auch komplexe Systeme wie eine Katze in einer Superposition befinden können, also zum Beispiel gleichzeitig tot und lebendig sein können, solange sie nicht von einem (intelligenten) Beobachter beobachtet werden.
Diese Vorstellung der Quanten-Physik miesfiel Schrödinger, weshalb er das berühmte Gedankenexperiment mit der Katze erfunden hat.
Dieses sieht in etwa wie folgt aus. Eine (lebendige) Katze wird zusammen mit einem radiaktiven Element, einem Geiger-Zähler und einem Gift in eine Box gesperrt, die 100% von der Aussenwelt abgeschirmt ist. Nichts dringt nach Außen oder Innen. Die Box wäre nach heutiger Sicht ein perfekter Quanten-Computer, der perfekt von der Außenwelt abgeschirmt ist.
Die Hypothese ist jetzt, dass sich das radioaktive Element in einer Superposition befindet und nach 1 Stunde mit 50% Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Teilchenzerfall stattgefunden hat oder nicht.
Dieser hypothetische Zerfall würde dann vom Geiger-Zähler detektiert werden oder nicht und würde dann entweder das Gift freisetzen oder nicht, was daraufhin die Katze töten würde oder nicht. Alles würde in eine Kette von Superpositionen versetzt werden. So die Überlegung.
Die Annahme ist, dass sich dann auch die Katze in einer Superposition befände und sich der Ausgang erst beim Öffnen der Box durch den (intelligenten) Beobachter der Zustand der Katze festlegen würde. Die Wellenfunktion würde dann kollabieren. Kopenhagener Interpretation.
Die zentrale Frage des Experiments ist, wann genau die Superposition von Teilchen (Quanten) aufhört und ob sie sich beliebig auf andere Teilchen übertragen lässt. Früher dachte man, dass man einen intelligenten Beobachter (mit Bewusstsein) bräuchte, um den Zustand festzulegen.
Die modernere Anschauung ist, dass die Dekohärenz der Superposition bereits mit der Interaktion mit anderen Teilchen, der Umgebung, stattfinden kann und unabhängig vom Beobachter ist.
Im Falle der Katze würde die Dekohärenz vermutlich spätestens bereits beim Geiger-Zähler stattfinden (Messung), der dann die Superposition des zerfallenen Teilchens auflöst. Die Natur müsste sich dann auf einen konkreteren Zustand festlegen. Das Teilchen wäre dann entweder wirklich zerfallen oder nicht, aber nicht mehr beides. Die Katze wäre dann in Folge auch entweder tot oder lebendig, aber nicht beides.
Das Paradoxon lässt sich also mit der Dekohärenz der Superposition auflösen. Die Katze wäre zu jedem Zeitpunkt in einem makroskopisch definierten Zustand. Also entweder tot oder lebednig unabhängig vom Beobachter.
Das Paradoxon hat übrigens auch Relevanz für Quanten-Computer. Die Frage ist, wie komplex überlagerte Zustände in der Natur tatsächlich werden können, bevor diese zerfallen. Die Annahme von Quanten-Computern ist, dass man mit extrem komplexen Zuständen, die intern extrem schnell exponentiell ins Unendliche anwachsen, parallel rechnen und beliebig viele Gate-Operationen ausführen kann. Ähnlich wie Schrödinger damals, bin ich ein bisschen skeptisch, ob das in der Realität tatsächlich funktioniert und ob es in der Natur nicht viele Cutoffs gibt und wo diese genau liegen. Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment by Erwin Schrödinger, one of the founders of quantum physics, which he formulated to Albert Einstein to express his skepticism about the view at the time that even complex systems such as a cat can be in a superposition, i.e. be dead and alive at the same time, for example, as long as they are not observed by an (intelligent) observer (with a consciousness).
Schrödinger disliked this Interpretation of quantum physics, which is why he invented the famous thought experiment with the cat. Schrödinger's cat.
It looks something like this. A (living) cat is locked in a box, which is 100% shielded from the outside world, together with a radioactive element, a Geiger counter and a poison. Nothing penetrates to the outside or inside. From today's perspective, the box would be a perfect quantum computer that is perfectly shielded from the outside world.
The hypothesis now is that the radioactive element is in a superposition and after 1 hour there is a 50% probability that a particle decay has taken place or not.
This hypothetical decay would then be detected by the Geiger counter or not and would then either release the poison or not, which would then kill the cat or not, putting everything in a chain of superpositions.
The assumption is that the cat would then also be in a superposition and the outcome would only be determined when the (intelligent) observer opens the box. The wave function would then collapse. Copenhagen interpretation.
The central question of the experiment is when exactly the superposition of particles (quanta) ends and whether it can be arbitrarily transferred to other particles. It used to be thought that an intelligent observer (with consciousness) was needed to determine the state.
The more modern view however is that the decoherence of the superposition takes already place with interactions with other particles, the environment, and is independent of the observer.
In the case of the cat, decoherence would presumably already take place at the latest at the Geiger counter (measurement), which then dissolves the superposition of the decayed particle. Nature must then commit itself to a more concrete state. The particle would then either really have decayed or not, but no longer both. The cat would then also be either dead or alive, but not both at the same time.
The paradox can therefore be resolved with the decoherence of superposition. The cat would be in a macroscopically defined state at all times. Either dead or alive, independent of the observer.
Incidentally, the paradox is also relevant for quantum computers. The question is how complex superimposed states in nature can actually become before they collapse. The assumption of quantum computers is that extremely complex states, which internally grow exponentially to infinity extremely quickly, can be used to perform calculations in parallel and any number of gate operations can be carried out. Similar to Schrödinger back then, I am a little skeptical as to whether this actually works in reality and whether there are many cut-offs in nature and where they exactly lie. Decoherence would be one such cut-off, as nature can prevent the exponential growth of internal quantum states to absurd proportions. With just a few hundred interacting qubits, you would have more internal states than the universe has atoms. On the other hand, it is also possible in nature for larger structures such as atoms or molecules to be in a superposition.
