To be honest I'm really surprised that no real major technology company used the blockchain technology earlier. There is literally no way they didn't recognized the huge potential oft the blockchain technology so I really wonder why they didn't jumped on the train earlier. As you stated there is so much more to it than payments that is basically also the reason why I see a great future for blockchain and therefor for Cryptocurrencies (for some at least).

Yes, they've been "researching blockchain technology" for a while now. What they seem to just be figuring out is that the value is in public blockchain networks, not in the private copies they might try to build.
