For something like that to happen, beyond the inner workings and the science of the coins, there will have to be a concerted PR campaign for one of the other coins. For those familiar with crypto, LTC and ETH are common names, but the community at large will still think of BTC when they think of crypto.

Yes right now for non tech person who has heard of cryptocurrency at all it will be bitcoin the rest are just not known.

Although bitcoin does present an opportunity for another coin to take over. I think a lot of the general public associates it with criminal activity and black markets. A coin with a cleaner reputation might get more widespread use.
