What Niche does Bitcoin fill? It seems they all compete for the anonymous "hacker friendly" currency niche. And Bitcoin can't win when trying to compete with Z-cash or even Dash from a purely technological perspective. You do make a good point about washing money and that is why law enforcement has all the exit routes monitored. If anyone tries to cash out into fiat, then there is AML/KYC.

Not sure exactly... they seem to be the first major player though... they have name recognition which creates trust among new users... and trust can't be underestimated, even if it's not the best. Will it be the main crypto currency 20 years from now? No idea, but it has 1st mover advantage right now...
