India is a nation that is a wonder even to its own citizens. The country has people of different colours, sizes, religions and languages. There is unity in spite of the difference, especially when it comes to the game of cricket.  The above photo is that of the Lulu Hypermarket in our city. The shop name is written in Malayalam language. What me write about this is the controversial statement sparked by the central minister of our country who said that #one nation one language and that it would be desirable to set Hindi as the primary language of India. I am not sure if he realizes that the rest of the states in India besides three or four do not have any connection with Hindi except as a language taught in schools. No natives of the southern or eastern states talk Hindi or even understand it. That being the truth, how can Hindi be made a primary language. I am not against Hindi and I in fact like it but it would be difficult to accept Hindi as an official language when we have grown up using English as the official language. Each state in India has its own language and people are naturally comfortable with it. It is understandable that the ministry wants a common language maybe under the assumption that the people would be more united but for that they should also consider removing the caste based reservation, the class based reservation and religion based reservation. What do you feel? India is united and will always be in spite of the huge differences in language and culture. No mater how many times, people have invaded our country, the country has learned to live with new languages, food culture, races and class. You can find influences of the Mughal, the Persian, the French, the Portuguese and the English and even parts of the Chinese in our lifestyle. Jai Hind image source - sayee
