I think the networks can merge. You create a smart contract to liquidate both networks and merge them into a new one. Everyone keeps their value. Two blockchains die as one is born. This would also have the advantage of creating a new genesis block. You create an ultimate checkpoint and no longer have to look at the previous history of the old chains.
