I think more people have heard this is the worst game of all time than have actually played it and its assumed lack of quality is why its remembered by so many as the worst game of all time. Its just inevitable when you've heard it over and over again. But yeah, those of us who've played through games like *Swordquest* have a much clearer perspective of the era. It was truly a confusing and frustrating game and from a kid who was able to entertain himself playing *Word Zapper* on the 2600, even I got bored trying to figure out what you were supposed to be doing in those games. I could only wander around those identical, but differently colored rooms so many times before turning the system off.

E.T. is the one game that I use to gauge just what age did a "reviewer", "journalist", YouTube "personality", etc came into retrogaming. If all they can do is pine E.T. as a bad game while only pointing at the usual reasons that EVERYONE uses, then I know they are not a gamer from the day. Instead, they are "new" gamers that want to ride the retrogaming bandwagon and get hits, views, likes, etc. They are just going through the motions and therefore, I tend to ignore them. The Swordquest franchise is MUCH worse. Seriously, at least E.T. was playable. These games were horrible, horrible, examples of "games" from the time. There is little more than moving some pixels across the screen, avoiding other pixels, then doing it again for whatever random reason the game deemed your fault. I am all for ambitious games, I kind of enjoyed Dragon's Lair on the NES for a week as I marveled at the graphics, the animation, and the shading. The thing is, after a week of that, I was back to square one - the game is just not a lot of fun. Sure, there are people that can one man, speed-run, that title but that isn't my skill level. I have trouble remembering what I ate this morning so remembering which stop on the elevator is the one I want is out of the question after I had just survived a myriad of enemies and death traps. Dragon's Lair is bad but not on the level of the Swordquest franchise. I would love for some of these "E.T. sucks" gamers to play a few hours of Swordquest with no manual, no comic, and no walk through PDF handy. Then I would love to hear their opinion on which was worse - Swordquest or E.T., I figure their opinion will change.

You nailed it. You can definitely tell when someone reviews or discusses E.T. and didn't grow up with it. I was playing E.T. when I was 6 or 7, so its been with me most of my life. I think trying to play Swordquest with no manual, the comics or walkthrough would cause them to commit seppuku. The comic was required to complete the game, if I remember right, because the clues to figuring out the puzzles were hidden in the panels of the comics and you had to match up the symbol with the page number or something. I don't remember exactly. I haven't touched Swordquest in at least 15 years. I still have my Earthworld comic though! Those were actually pretty cool. In fact, I might do a post discussing Swordquest in the future and dig into the games that were released, the one that wasn't, the comic books and the contest that tied it all together.

I was born in 1976 and was playing E.T. when it first came out, not sure at what age, I wasn't ten yet - I know that. I remember it being "different" versus the other games I had at the time and actually liking it a bit more than some of the other games available at that time. I didn't know a crash was going on, I just knew all of a sudden my dad was bringing home several games for me and brother and sister to play when prior he was asking us what ONE game did we want. I don't think modern gamers that want in on the retro fun realize how obvious it is to people like you and me that they didn't grow up with these games. I remember having one of the Swordquest comics taken away from me at school (probably first or second grade) and the look on the principals face when my dad told them he was the one that bought that stuff for me (if memory serves me correctly, there a few risquΓ© pieces of artwork in them). Man, it was a simpler time. I know that is ironic as we are discussing a super complicated game franchise but it really was a simpler time. Now everyone spends all day arguing over which console sold more units in the previous quarter rather than just enjoying the games available.
