If someone is capable to attack you, he can attack you. The only thing the attacker needs is an opportunity. When you give him an opportunity, you put yourself in a vulnerable position.

You always want to fight where you have the advantages. In a fight, if you fall on the ground, you have less opportunity as long as you stay on the ground. The attacker can kick you, punch you, and hit you. You try to get up, but the attacker does not let you do that.

I highly recommend watching this [video](https://youtu.be/CaHBs9B5sB8) where it shows how to defend yourself when you are on the ground and get up. The thing is, you will have more opportunities when you stand up. It does not mean you cannot do anything on the ground.

You can move, defend the attacker's strike, kick the attacker, grab and pull the attacker to make him lose his balance. Fighting with multiple attackers is difficult and it will be more difficult if you are on the ground.

All attackers can attack you from different directions and you will find it hard to protect yourself.  Even if you are good at the ground fight, you might not like to fight on the ground to defend yourself. There will be no mat on the ground. It is not the training ground. And the attackers will not show any mercy.

During a fight, if you make the attacker fall on the ground, don't get to the ground in a grapple position. You might also end up on the ground.
