Often the reason plants have pests is they don't have really healthy soil. Either it's not balanced or the biology is missing. Fix both problems and plants become healthy enough to resist or even kill pests.

I think maybe the compost I bought wasn't very good quality, I heard adding egg shells helps. I've ground some to powder not sure if that will work.

If you already have too much calcium, adding more will make the problem worse. Compost makers do not test the compost to see if it is balanced. Soil testing, a comprehensive test, is the only way to make truly balanced healthy soil.
