Passing Waters
<div class="text-justify">

Perhaps one day if I could, I would build a comfortable house by the sea, looking over the water. Big windows at the front with quadruple glazed windows to keep the sound out and warmth in, when the overcast skies contrast with the interior, and open up when the weather is fair to hear the waves crashing on the shore and the sea birds. A place where I can feel at home, regardless of what is going on outside, or in the rest of the world. A place to think, write, and grow.

---

On the current trajectory, it is out of my reach, but maybe I am able to change the direction or the velocity in the future and something will happen that makes it possible. I would design, but have someone build and fit the house, and on the same property, I would have a work shed built, fitted with all the tools necessary to get my hands dirty and create. I have always wanted to design furniture.

> But have never made even the smallest foray into that world.

*Other than buying some furniture.*

And nope, I am not going to get into it in that imaginary future either, though if I have time and money, I would likely dabble a little building something. Because I enjoy it. Yet, I am guessing I am not the only one in the world that had ideas of what I could do in life, but never followed through on them and instead chose what I thought I needed to do instead - To do the thing that I thought would allow me to live some kind of comfortable life.

> The jokes on me.

Yesterday, one of the ex-colleagues was talking about her daughters and that she is "pushing" (she isn't actually pushing) her daughters into becoming plumbers. And by a stroke of coincidence, just that morning I had read an article from Australia that only one in a hundred fifty plumbers are women. Most of construction and maintenance is heavily skewed male, but I suspect that there is going to be a growing demand for female tradies of all kinds, where women will feel "safer" with a woman coming into their home.

> However, how many women want to become plumbers?

*I haven't met one.*

And it gets me thinking about how many times we make career decisions on how we feel, without actually thinking about whether it is a good thing to do, or right for us. I am not sure if anyone says "Plumber is the job for me" when they are young, but I suspect that some realise that it is a job that will be in demand for any foreseeable future, and a job that isn't easily replaceable. Which is why my ex-colleague has this in mind for her daughters. She works in IT as a leader, and sees what is happening in her teams as AI replaces their tasks, and headcount is whittled down.

I think that we still feel that no matter what happens with the coming technology, there will always be *some kind of work* for most of us. And while that might be true to some extent, is it the kind of work that the average person wants to do? Perhaps even in the future, the oldest profession will be mostly replaced by AI, AR and VR. It is already happening.

> Another colleague was talking about a friend who spends his time interacting with an AI-powered virtual girl. And unashamedly *introduced* "her" to him.

I am not one to kink shame... *but that is not a kink anymore.* It is increasingly normalised and people justify that spending time interacting with AI is actually a healthy way to live life. After all, it helps lonely people have connection.

> So does learning how to connect with real people.

The more we practice, the stronger our habits get. But our current practices are building habits that make us increasingly fragile, whether mentally, physically, or emotionally. We are making decisions based on our feelings, that are weakening our abilities to interact with each other, or to deal with disruptive situations. Sure, people can ay the world is more complicated and difficult in different ways now - but *that is a symptom of our habits too!* We are making the decisions that take us along this path.

> Demand and Supply.

I don't know if I will ever be able to have that "dream" home on the coast, overlooking a stormy sea, but I do know that if I were to get it, chances are that it is going to take me doing something quite different than I am at the moment. But I have habits too, and they make me feel like I am doing the right thing, even if I logically know it isn't likely to be the case. I am reserved when I should be bolder, and too bold when I should be cautious. My brain knows, but from years of repetitive practice, my body doesn't.

But, we don't know what the future holds, no longer how adamant some people are currently. Normally, the timeframe of "the future" is grossly overestimated as to how quickly things will change - but will that be the case in the future too? For somethings probably, but some other aspects, including some we are yet to even invent, will rapidly evolve and influence everything we know and do. Remember when the internet first arrived in the mainstream?

> What has changed in the way we live our lives since?

But we still need plumbers.

A beautifully reflective piece, dreams, doubts, and the quiet courage to wonder what if. Sometimes, the longing for a house by the sea says more about the life we truly want than any job ever could.

A house like that was the dream for me as well, but I think it is going to be less likely given the way things are going in the world. I am trying to come to grips with just being content where I am and seeing the abundance around me versus always hoping for something else. I think in another life it might have been cool to be an electrician or a HVAC technician. The money seems to be quite good and you are always in demand.

> I am trying to come to grips with just being content where I am and seeing the abundance around me versus always hoping for something else.

This is a necessity too, as there is always more. The risk is, choosing this view to settle instead of pushing for growth. Growth comes in many forms though.

You know what I don't get about electrical for most cases in houses? Why isn't it plug and play. Why not use standardized connections, like USB?

USB is a relatively low voltage design. I don't think you could get away with that quite as easily when you are talking 110V and 15 to 30 amps. Plus wattage draw and heat creation are going to be a factor as well. I think I understand what you are saying, but there are more things to consider when you up move up to high voltage.

I am not in complete agreement, but I think that it is normally the case. I reckon one of the problems is that people "work for the money" but expect more than the money from their work.

> our current practices are building habits that make us increasingly fragile, whether mentally, physically, or emotionally.

Certainly outside of my life as a teacher, I am just barely floating by. Weekend after weekend, dancing the night away in dark clubs with a couple of my closest friends. I used to think it was a celebration of freedom and expression, but now it just feels like a fleeting escape. More and more of those underground safe spaces to share rave culture are going away, replaced by mega clubs optimized to present a commercial copy of a rave while extracting every last bit of profit.

There was a friend of mine I knew from my days of playing competitive magic the gathering that was struggling mightily with the trajectory of his life in the suburbs of NYC. He didn't have consistent work, he wasn't getting the attention he wanted in social communities and felt stuck.

He made the decision to move across the country to AZ and become a plumber. He started with an 11-month apprenticeship with a good friend of our, and a year later he had his own truck. Two years later, him and his buddy started their own service. He started going to thr gym regularly. He paid off all his debt. He started getting noticed by girls, the crazy big titty goth babies of his dreams. He is finally living his best life, all because he took that first step to become a plumber.

I hope I am afforded the same outcome as a teacher. I've been looking at opportunities to teach in American school overseas. They're out there, but for my partner who working in marketing management, that will be much tougher. Her industry in contracting rapidly, with so many of the different work streams in her department getting replaced by AI. If the whole project is being run by AI, they certainly won't need her to connect the dots, just the AI engineer.

I know I'd much rather train the youth of our society, than train the next generation of AI to take over even more human output. I need more Bitcoin!

Before we used the internet to escape a little from reality, now we use nature as that dream you have Mr. Tarazkp, to have a house with a view to the sea to escape just a little from the internet haha, if possible I am trying for health reasons to live a life beyond the digital. J is still not confident about AI coding XD

apparently a thing came up where a complete non-coder used AI to code up something that they needed and was apparently completely baffled as to why IT straight up noped it

and very vaguely related [this](https://deplet.ing/the-copilot-delusion/) crossed my feeds at some point; I wanted to flick it in your direction because the ranty tone kind of reminded me of some of your rants but never got around to it

At least trades/"blue collar" professions aren't as "frowned upon" now as they were I don't think.

I donno I remember being younger and everyone wanting their kids to be accountants and business owners and whatever and getting mad when they "just" wanted to be mechanics or carpenters, maybe it was a cultural thing

A lot of the local kids I know or know of have gotten into trades (several of middle's friends are doing apprenticeships/traineeships somewhere in construction, and one is a butcher) partly because it's still "easier" to get into and partly because they're not as dumb as they and all the oldies like to pretend they are. Over here eldest (definitely smart enough to get into something "white collar", was interested in engineering at one point) has decided to try out climbing arborilist (basically gardener that can advise on and climb trees to prune/lop them as far as I can tell) and middle has gone back to her original plan of early childhood education after a brief stint "trying something different" in a course similar to what me and her aunty did way back when.

neither sibling dearest nor I have a job related to the course we did

Useful things that will probably still need to be done for a while XD

Ahh yes I remember when the internet was a weird fad.

I wonder what is more peaceful: the sound of ocean waves at the shore of your waterfront dream residence or the silent stream of $$$$ hitting your bank account every month from several million dollars working passively for you at 4-5% risk free...

Hmm, this is such a thoughtful and relatable post. I really felt the part about dreaming of a peaceful home by the sea; it's something many of us wish for. But then reality hits, and we realize that to get there, we might have to change direction or do something completely different. I think it is not about us not wanting to follow our part or focus on our goals, but most of the problems we encountered, or should i say, obstacles is the fact that we are being limited by our chance of getting things done due to financial constraints. At the same time, it is part of life anyway, most of the time that we get what we want in life even with the financial capability, health attimes can be a problem.

I also found the discussion about career choices and how feelings often drive them very honestly. I think it is about our choice. When it comes to career paths, gender and sex are often taken into consideration. Some would say that there are jobs for women, and there are some that are meant for just man.

It is true that with the current evolution of technology and AI, a lot of job would be replaced by machine and it is already happenings and I don't think plumbing is part unless in the area of maintenance.

In all, life doesn't always work on how we want it. There are some situations that is beyond us as we couldn't explain how it happen. We just have to keep trying our best and pray for breakthrough and support for our maker.

I would choose a house near a field and a forest. It is too windy by the sea. And I want to spend most of the day in the fresh air.

I like the sea breeze. Even the storms. I have lived by the beach earlier, though it was in the tropics and was therefore always warm too.

The way we normalize virtual relationships has a big impact on how we connect with each other. For sure technology can offer comfort to people who feel alone, but it also runs the risk of weakening the crucial interpersonal skills we need for our emotional well-being.

And I think it also runs the risk of turning people into self-indulging freaks. Well, *more* into self-indulging freaks :)
