It is strange how some people's attention to detail keeps them functioning, and for another, it is a dysfunction. I think we all need some order in our lives, but at least for me, too much saps my strength as much as having too little. I think the breadth of the skills we need to function well in a typical job is underrated these days - and a lot of people don't have many of them, but those that do - aren't rewarded.

I think breadth for most managers is what is needed, at least those in IT service, but instead they are looking for the opposite. They want depth instead. So what you get is a manager who was a real shit hot network administrator with a CCNP, but can't manage a budget, lead a team, deal with escalations and customers, or think outside the tech box...all at the same time. Just my observations before I left the field.

This is true. I think that there might be a change (I have a limited view of the entire world) though, as "experts" are no longer necessarily promoted because they are great at what they do. They need to be able to be at least adequate at what they would need to do for a new role. Many can't spread their skillset, though I also think some are learning that if they want to empower themselves, they are going to have to have more width.
