Hungarian Yellow Wax Pepper Plant

Hello Everyone, 

Today we'll be looking at the Hungarian Yellow Wax pepper plant.

I acquired a seed packet a couple of years ago from Walmart and had a couple unsuccessful germination attempts until getting this one to sprout a couple of months ago.

After germination I struggled with this plant, it almost died and was very finicky about its soil medium and watering in the first couple of weeks, but the plant pulled through and started rapidly growing after being moved under some higher powered LED's. (light emitting diodes.)

The branch system is strong and healthy, it could use a little trim work after this round of peppers, and perhaps a transplant to increase the size of the plant and avoid any issues with root bounding.

We can see here that these peppers grow to be over three inches long and have a waxy appearance. 

So how hot are they and what is the flavor like?

According to my research these peppers are 5,000 to 15,000 Scoville units on average, slightly stronger than jalapeno peppers as a basis of comparison, and the flavor is slightly sweet and is sought after for its excellent flavor in a variety of dishes. 

Personal measure of pepper heat is a subjective thing however, and one should exercise caution with eating hot peppers, especially if lacking in experience with ingesting them.

I have yet to ingest a fully ripened Hungarian Yellow Wax pepper, but I have tried them in their yellowish green stage like the smaller pepper above. The heat was surprising and much hotter than I imagined. I think the ripe ones will be painful, I'm looking forward to it.

I like to eat hot peppers raw as well as use them for cooking.

But Hungarian people can easily consume it.
It can be eaten raw ( as you would do), but just very tiny pieces of it... or cooked in some dishes like goulash, but as a whole piece. If it opens while cooking, the whole dish will be spicy :D

Are hot peppers extremely hot? 
I remember my aunt from Sweden ate it raw.hehehe
In my case, would love to use them for cooking. It makes the dish aromatic.

Not all hot peppers are extremely hot, but for the inexperienced pepper eater this one would be excruciatingly painful. I would not recommend this type of pepper for a beginner to eat raw in this fashion! I would advise against it, however I eat them raw and enjoy the painful experience because it actually releases endorphins in the brain and is a painful but pleasurable experience simultaneously.

Hola amigo, este es el pimiento que me gusta preparar en vinagre es muy rico y picante, aquí en mi país a veces lo compro porque tienen un  agradable sabor a la vinagreta.

No I would not eat it raw. Maybe chopped small in a salsa, but take a big chunk out? No way. 

I put seven peppers plants out in a raised bed last summer, and got one pepper out of all those plants. ONE. I am astounded that you've gotten even two. But you make it sound as if you have harvested a few before this. How many?

This plant produced a few before this, but I harvested them way too early. 

I already harvested these two and ate them whole, they were slightly hotter than a jalapeno but not hot enough for my taste. I have quite a capsaicin addiction, and have heard that it's not an uncommon addiction, especially for addicts like me :D

What kind of pepper plants were you growing @owasco ? To get one pepper out of seven plants is unfortunate! 
I am not sure why that would happen, but perhaps our climate is not the best, many of these hot pepper plants grow in warmer and/or more humid regions. 

They're pretty finicky to work with overall in my limited experience, they drop leaves a lot and flowers just as much. Sometimes the flower drops can get a little frustrating.

I think I may have planted in a bed that was too nutritious (solid cow manure), or so I have been told this might be the cause. They started off looking really good, but eventually the tops would turn brown and shrivel up. Flowers never developed into fruits. I had the same problem with eggplant, but tomatoes did fine. All three were planted in the same bed. 

Poblano, lemon jalapeno, and orange bell peppers. Rosita eggplant. Such a bummer, but there's always next year. 

I never heard that about pepper addiction. I know a few people who are addicted to kale, which I abhor. There are so many tasty greens in the world, why eat the one that tastes like wood?
