I have 2 PhDs and I must say, terminal degrees are way over-rated.

Don't get a PhD to try to sell books.  [The median peer-reviewed journal article (the writing that most PhDs do) only gets read by the authors themselves, the reviewers (hopefully), and a journal editor](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/half-academic-studies-are-never-read-more-three-people-180950222/).

I would say, for your first book, team up and try to co-author it with someone who has been highly successful publishing multiple books in that topic area already.

Only get a PhD if the degree is a hard-and-fast requirement to get the job you really want to do (e.g. tenure track faculty position).
