When we finally fulfilled our whim of visit the extinct volcano at over 5000 meters above sea level, we were ready to continue our trip to where we really wanted to go in the first place: the <strong>Salar de Uyuni</strong>. This was literally the only place I had heard of in Bolivia, as I was not very familiar with what to do in the neighboring country. I really liked the idea of ​​going to see a salt flat, because even though I had already seen two others in Argentina, <strong>this was the largest in the world and therefore it had to be incredible ❤️.</strong>

Since we had spent our morning visiting the mining <a href="https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@lauramica/bolivia-the-highest-i-have-ever-been-in-my-life-adventure-to-reach-the-cerro-chorolque-at-more-than-5000-masl-lo-mas-alto-que-">town of Santa Barbara and Cerro Chorolque</a>, we arrived a little late in Uyuni, after traveling almost 120 km to get there. That day we went straight to the hostel, where they charged us 85 bolivianos pesos per person in a shared room (almost $13, and we chose this option because private rooms were really expensive). But the next day, we packed all our things with the idea of ​​spending the night camping in the salt flat 😃.

Ese día fuimos directo al hostel, en donde nos cobraron 85 pesos bolivianos por persona en habitación compartida (casi $13, y elegimos esta opción porque las habitaciones privadas realmente eran muy costosas). Pero al día siguiente, preparamos todas nuestras cosas con la idea de ir a pasar la noche acampando en el salar 😃.

To get to the salt flat, you have to drive for more than 30 kilometers from the town to it. We read a lot on the internet before going, mainly because they said it was very easy to get lost in that white desert. But when we arrived, we met many other people who were also going so we followed them. Something that I don't like at all is wearing sunglasses, but in this place I had to do it because so much light blinded you quickly 😂.

Leímos mucho en internet antes de ir, principalmente porque decían que era muy fácil perderte en ese desierto blanco. Pero cuando llegamos, nos encontramos con muchas otras personas que también estaban yendo así que los seguimos. Algo que a mí no me gusta para nada es usar lentes de sol, pero en este lugar tuve que hacerlo porque tanta claridad te enceguecía rápidamente 😂.

The first place we stopped at inside the salt flat was one that was marked on the map as "eyes of the salt flat." At this place there were some holes in the ground where the water came out. On the recommendation of a friend, I didn't try the water because she told me that she had been poisoned. But the rest of the people tried it and said that it was obviously very salty. Even Guest M tried it, but luckily nothing bad happened to him 😂.

<blockquote>El primer lugar en el que paramos dentro del salar fue uno que en mapa figuraba como "ojos del salar". En este lugar habían unos pozos en el suelo en donde el agua brotaba de él. Por recomendación de una amiga, yo no probé el agua porque ella me dijo que se había intoxicado. Pero el resto de la gente la probaba y decía que era muy salada obviamente. Hasta Huésped M la probó, pero por suerte no le pasó nada malo 😂.

Here there were also the famous flags that promote the salt flat with their sign for the photo. There were flags from all countries, an idea for gossiping on the internet. We also saw many photographers with the classic little figures to take funny photos in the salt flat, playing with the perspectives of the distances 😃.

While it's true that the desert is huge, our offline maps showed several routes to follow inside the salt flat. Also, since this place is so touristy, it was full of trucks and cars going everywhere, so it wasn't hard to follow them to know where to go. It was true that the perspectives here are interesting: if you went a little further away, all the cars seemed super small 😅.

Another interesting stop inside the salt flat was the famous salt hotel. I really wanted to see what it was all about, so we went, and luckily, access was quite free. This hotel has the peculiarity that it is all built with blocks of salt, from the walls to the furniture. Its internal decoration was very rustic but interesting, and although they had their own buffet with basic things, you could still sit down and eat your own food 😃.

<blockquote>Otra de las paradas interesantes dentro del salar era su famoso hotel de sal. Tenía muchas ganas de ver de qué se trataba esto así que fuimos, y por suerte, su acceso era bastante libre. Este hotel tiene la particularidad de que está todo construido con bloques de sal, desde las paredes hasta los muebles. Su decoración interna era muy rústica pero interesante, y aunque ellos tenían su propio bufet con cosas básicas, igualmente podías sentarte a comer tu propia comida 😃.

The hotel is not very big, so you could walk around almost all of it. One of the rooms was also open to the public so you could see what it was like inside. Even the beds were made out of salt blocks, which I loved. It was not clear to me if this hotel really functions as a place to stay or if it is more of a place to visit during the day, but it was very interesting to see it anyway. They also sell Bolivian souvenirs and you can go to the bathroom here, which you have to take advantage of because after that there are miles and miles without any other kind of service 😅.

Hasta las camas estaban construidas con bloques de sal, me encantó. No me quedó claro si este hotel realmente funciona como hospedaje o es más bien un lugar para visitar de día, pero como sea fue muy curioso conocerlo. También venden recuerdos de Bolivia y se puede ir al baño en este lugar, lo que hay que aprovechar si o sí porque después de quedan kilómetros y kilómetros sin ningún otro tipo de servicio 😅.

Something we had seen that could be done at the Salar de Uyuni was to take the classic mirror photos with the rainwater that accumulates on these soils. However, our visit was at the beginning of September and the season for this climate starts in November, so we didn't see any of this. Instead, driving aimlessly, we came to a completely dry part where you could see some geometric shapes formed by the dryness of the salt. This effect was hypnotic while we were in the car and even more striking when we got out to see it up close. <strong>Beautiful ❤️!</strong>

<blockquote>Algo que habíamos visto que se podía hacer en el Salar de Uyuni era sacarse las clásicas fotos espejadas con el agua de lluvia que se acumula en estos suelos. Sin embargo, nuestra visita fue en principios de Septiembre y la temporada de este clima empieza en Noviembre, por lo que no vimos nada de esto. En su lugar, manejando sin rumbo, llegamos a una parte completamente seca en donde se podían ver unas formas geométricas formadas por la resequedad de la sal. We spent half of our day exploring the classic bridges of the Salar de Uyuni and we still had to find a place to camp, but we didn't want to miss out on the beautiful weather we had. Being in that white desert meant having to put on sunscreen all the time and wear sunglasses as much as possible, but it was worth it. I had previously visited the Salinas Grandes in Jujuy and the Salinas del Gualicho in Río Negro, both in Argentina, but visiting this salt flat in Bolivia was a much bigger experience. <strong>I was glad I had dared to go there ❤️!</strong>

<blockquote>Pasamos la mitad de nuestro día recorriendo los puentos clásicos del Salar de Uyuni y todavía teníamos que encontrar un lugar para acampar, pero no queríamos dejar de aprovechar el clima hermoso que nos había tocado. Estar en ese desierto tan blanco implicó tener que ponernos protector solar a cada rato y usar los lentes de sol lo más posible, pero valió la pena. Yo ya había visitado anteriormente las Salinas Grandes en Jujuy y la Salinas del Gualicho en Río Negro, ambas en Argentina, pero conocer este salar en Bolivia fue una experiencia mucho más grande. <strong>¡Me alegré por haberme animado a ir hasta ahí ❤️! </strong>
