I know some riders in Oz that do long, long distances, the only one riding like they are in a recliner is the one in the trailer - which is pretty much a recliner :)

If you are leaned back very far (past a couple of degrees past vertical) you are putting enormous pressure on your butt and lower spine. Long riders tend to sit just forward, but often with a possibility to lean back just a touch from time to time. The Iron Butts here do astounding mileage for days at a time. But they train like other athletes. BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph make bikes specific to the genre.

I am guessing there aren't many that ride street bikes long distances.

There's a few. They are tough bastards. There's a guy I know over in San Diego county that rides and tours a Hayabusa. He's got to be on his 4th or 5th, it's his signature bike for his touring company which is his living. His wife rides a much more sensible bike on the tours... I also know a guy that rides a Harley street bike long. Another very rare bird. His hips have to be made of rubber or something like it. The HD touring bikes are actually pretty comfy. They put your feet underneath you and have good fairings.
