If people did everything for money alone, not many people would become competent artists - sure, some make money, but that is not how they ended up in their field. Same with most sportspeople. :) I am glad you brought up "taking things seriously" because this is how I see it too. Yes, there is a lot of room for fun, but work is serious, it requires attention and effort - it doesn't matter if it is for a salary or in the attempt to raise a strong child. Your colleague sounds like many people - they "know it all" *except how to get it done.*
