By 1798, France was basking in military victories, particularly in Italy, and had forged alliances that further threatened British interests. With a looming invasion of Britain deemed impossible, the French sought to undermine British power indirectly via an expedition to Egypt. If successful, this campaign could notably cripple British trade and influence in the region.

As the British remained aware of French movements, Rear-Admiral Nelson was dispatched to investigate a sizable French fleet gathering at Toulon. Unfortunately, inclement weather thwarted his initial pursuit, allowing General Bonaparte to embark on his Egyptian journey, landing successfully and paving the way for a significant victory at the Battle of the Pyramids.
