My first day of Hive, I saw a note about witnessing to support folks. I added witnesses to three of the names I saw, but it completely wrecked my RC for the day. Do you mind briefly explaining what witnessing does?

I've done quite a bit of research, but it's surprisingly difficult to find up-to-date information regarding Hive and its intricacies. I feel like it's useful in some way, but I'm not sure how :S

Hive Witnesses (aka "Block Producers") who govern hive blockchain. 

Hive Witnesses operate "consensus" servers (nodes) and ensure the correct behavior of the blockchain.

They also make consensus decisions for the future development of Hive.

Each account can vote for 30 witnesses and the vote is proportional to the amount of Hive Power controlled by the account.
