Maybe the huge wave of account creations has slowed down for now (but promises to pick up again from the quotes you added), but many of the new players that joined Splinterlands in the summer-fall craziness period are still around and active. The competition increased exponentially and I still barely recognize opponents nowadays, which means most of them are from the new wave.
