I agree. I think though that *we* can do better, but not necessarily the government. We have set up a strange economy that doesn't work due to very bad incentives, maybe things can change.

I wonder if there was a different system, kind of like a hybrid, where some taxes were paid for some services (for example infrastructure or healthcare), but the rest of the taxes were able to be granted by the tax payer as to where they go - kind of like a dPOS.

It also takes away our sense of responsibility and duty of care for others. We need not care, because we pay someone else to care for us.

I agree. I often think how amazing it has been to be able to do something for many people, who if having to do in "real life" I wouldn't be able to, or perhaps wouldn't be willing to do much for.
