The Power over Us

Finally, we can make tea and coffee in the kitchen, instead of the bathroom, as now we have power in the outlets - and *outlets.* The sparky was here this evening getting the last bits of the kitchen electricals done, but he will come back and test all the wires and points to make sure they have the right currents running through them. And, while we will have to organize the space more on the weekend, so far so good, things are working as expected and we aren't tripping over ourselves to get anything done.

And, we have a breakfast nook hidden in the cupboards, which is absent a toaster because well, we don't really eat much bread in this house. My wife and daughter are gluten-free, and I am just trying not to get fatter. Unfortunately, I also eat other foods that make me fat.

But, speaking of fat, a friend of mine was saying how she is entering the lottery now, because the economy is looking so bad and money is getting tight. And I was thinking about how common it is that we wait until things are bad before we do something about it - and I am not saying that *entering the lottery* is a healthy strategy to ease financial hardship, but, just in a general sense.

For example, losing weight is generally met with a diet of some kind, however a "diet" is just whatever we are commonly eating. If we have a good diet that keeps us healthy, we don't have to "go on a diet" to lose weight, because we would never have gained the weight in the first place.

If my friend, who has a good job that pays well, had been thinking about her financial diet, she would likely never have got herself into the position of "relying" (she isn't relying) on the lottery to ease her troubles. It is not that she would be living it up all the time, but she would have far lower debt, more invested and some emergency savings. Yet, now that things are starting to get a little more difficult, the only one out of the three she has, *is debt.* And, it isn't a low debt either.

This is very common though, isn't it? waiting until the eleventh hour to do the things that we know we should have been doing all along. As I keep saying, there is a big difference between *knowing and doing,* and we are all guilty of not doing what we know we should, whilst also doing things that we know we shouldn't.

I wish I had a control function that I could turn up or down depending on my goals for the day, though I guess no matter the goal, absolute self-control would be beneficial. So, why don't we spend more time developing it? Why doesn't culture look to train it, why is willpower seen as such an advantage, but we don't have classes on willpower development? Seem like an oversight. 

*Or not.*

If we all had a lot of self-control, as soon as we realized that something wasn't good for us, we would be able to stop *consuming* it, and that is bad for business. How much of business is really aimed at improving our quality of life, and how much just says it will? 

Pretty much, the vast majority of business models are irrelevant for our survival and most are likely counterproductive to improving our wellbeing in the long time, either as individuals or a society in general. And, it seems that the worse something is for us, the more we are willing to pay for it.

When I lived in Australia and smoked, they were 7 dollars a pack. That was 20 years ago, but still, it is a 600% increase in that time and still, 12% of Australians are smokers. How the hell do people afford to smoke??

I wonder how many of them would quit if it was as easy as just pressing a button and stopping, never having to think about them again? 

But, that button doesn't exist yet, so we have to carry our vices around with us and hope that our willpower is strong enough to keep them in check so they don't run rampant. However, with the "love your flaws" philosophy these days, people seem to think that letting them run wild is healthy. People love their own bodies so much, that they get upset if other people who love their bodies too, happen to be have skinnier bodies.

Well, that is not true. These days, there are:

Standards.

Almost 8 billion people who wat to e recognized and respected as their unique self, identify to particular groups, but not be singled out or omitted from any other groups, while closing people out of their "own" groups - if convenient on the day.

No wonder we have impulse control and consumerism problems, we can't even control our own perspective and understanding of ourselves - we are all "fluid".

Well, if people "can do anything" - how come we aren't all choosing to do the things that make us financially secure, healthy, loving? Why are so many choosing to stay the same or take self-destructive paths, if they *know* that there are other options. Are we all so self-sabotaging and looking for painful life experience? At least my friend seems to think that she would be better off with different financial conditions, even though she does the wrong things to have them.

They say power corrupts. 
*Perhaps this is why we have given up control over ourselves.*

Damn, it is late again.

I am so glad that I do not smoke or do drugs. Though I drink coffee and an occasional beer. Yeah, folk are weak and vulnerable to vice and that vice has power over them. It may be from loneliness, low self-esteem, stress or countless other psychological baggage. It may be from a lost dream or that girl that got away or the child that died in infancy. Why are we so weak and vulnerable to forfeiting our power, our health and our sanity? Everyone's situation is different. But believe me the powers that run this big club know our weaknesses.

Ass! As soon as I put the picture, I saw it too. Trust me, I didn't buy it, but yes, it is some Christmas one I got as a gift. People often buy me coffees for gifts, which is silly, because I only drink dark roast - red wine on the other hand, always a great gift idea! :D

There is no helping most people perhaps - they have to dig their own way out, otherwise, they will just end up there again.

Exercising self control and willpower requires effort.  I have this conspiracy theory that everyone is very deliberately run off their feet and shamed into being "productive" every waking second and deluded into thinking that's somehow "good work ethic" precisely so that they're too exhausted to spend the additional eeffort on self control and willpower and will just mindlessly buy crap to fill voids because that's infinitely easier than doing other things that might fill those voids (because the other things such as building and cultivating relationships or engaging in hobbies also requires effort).

This is a very interesting concept and something that makes me think a lot lately.

We are almost done with a solar installation at home. Together with the solar panels and inverter, we will have an App showing us live production and consumption and if we are purchasing power or sending it to the network at any time.

Several months before contracting, I was asking for several quotes from different companies and started adding the "control" button in my daily thinking, before all I was doing was getting mad when the invoice was showing the amount of money we have been paying in the past year due to electricity price increase, but ironically I was almost doing nothing to correct that. 

Just because of the "control panel" we have started to be more conscious every time we consume and just making slight changes in our daily behavior has reduced the consumption. On top of that we will be producing quite soon so hopefully our "electrical power diet" will make us consume in a much more intelligent way.

That array looks great and a perfect illustration of our behavior. 

I find that I keep "settling" for worse conditions, just because I can't flick the switch and do something about it. It is about attention and as you said, "once you became more conscious" - you started making those slight changes. They add up.

I smoked 11 years ago, cigarettes were inexpensive, 2-3 dollars a pack. But the habit itself is, of course, very harmful. Well, quit smoking, got free alcohol, about $1,000 a year. Bought a bottle of Absolut the other day for only $14.

In a way yes, because I think that there is so much influence we are unaware of that guides us, that even the decisions we "make", are not likely much ours anyway. This doesn't mean we can't change our behavior, but that change is likely already coded into our experience.
