Robots harness rhythm Now, a research team led by Albu-Schäffer at TUM has used the tool for calculating highly efficient movements in robots. This tool identifies natural oscillation patterns, allowing researchers to determine which movements require the least energy. The tool was tested on BERT, a small dog-like four-legged robot created by Albu-Schäffer at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The research goal is to develop effective and adaptable legged movement. Walking, trotting, and hopping are examples of the six energy-efficient movement patterns that the researchers found for BERT. These patterns match the robot’s inherent oscillation, demonstrating that using these innate rhythms to create efficient gaits is possible.
