It *Should* work in this scenario at least, as it would keep the water from pushing into the yard and flooding the road. One of the issues is that there are patches of clay under the road too, so it doesn't absorb the water well and just sits. 

We kept the ladder because it is the original one. We could have replaced it with a newer version , but in the advent of fire, it is what it is :)
