Faith and Work Made My Mum Walk: A Testimony (NONFICTION) 🙏🙏🙏😌
“Are you sure you heard him right? This can’t be true!” My voice trembled as I dropped the phone. Like a man who had just escaped a delicate situation, I was sweating profusely.

“What sort of news is this? I never planned starting my year this way.” As I concluded the statement, hot tears rolled down my cheeks.

It’s January and we had just finished the celebration of the festive period and the new year celebration is still in the air.

“The year 2024 is my year!” This has been my daily mantra, even through December 2023. I had a lot I had planned doing but like many other beings in the universe, I couldn’t achieve all.

After the call I got, I called my dad to confirm the sad news. “Hello daddy, is it true something happened to mummy, what happened?” Before his reply, I could already sense the tension in the air, he was as silent as a graveyard.

“Yes, it’s true, he finally replied.” Like a strong man holding his emotions, I could sense the control in his voice. “How did it happen? Can I talk to her?”

I was already as scared as a puppy in the companion of lions. “No, she’s resting for now,” came the cold voice of my dad. I had just returned from work and it was already 9:45pm, making a trip to my parents’ house would be a suicide mission at such a late time. “I’ll be there tomorrow morning.” I said as I dropped the call.

My mother was involved in an accident on the 5th January and I was told she was in so much pains. I later got to know my dad was only covering up, when he said she was resting. He was hiding the whole situation from me so I wouldn’t be too disturbed. He knew how much I loved my mother. I couldn’t wait for the morning to come, it was a sleepless night and I wasn’t going to do anything than worry through the night.

“How are you feeling mum?” Like a blend of sweet and bitter drinks, mixed feelings came running. I was grateful she was alive but had a pinch in my heart when she tried standing but couldn’t. “Do you need help?” As I asked my eyes were already red, filled with tears. I had never seen my mother in such a position and I was already wondering whether she would ever be able to walk again.

“We need to go to the hospital, we have done some x-rays yesterday.” As my dad told me, I knew we had to prepare for the hospital and it wasn’t going to be an easy task as my mum couldn’t walk.

“Dear Lord please, heal her, heal her!” As I prayed tears rolled down my cheeks, I quickly turned my face and cleaned my tears as I wouldn’t want to add more issue to the current challenge on ground.

“Just help me with my long stick,” as my mum wriggled in pain, like every strong woman, she tried hiding the pain in her thigh but I could see as she tried managing to stand from the couch she was seated. I didn’t know when I carried her and helped her to the car. It was a scene that couldn’t be described. Emotions flying everywhere like many birds covering the skies.

I had already lost hope, seeing I had to carry my mother. “What is the problem, why are you carrying her, I have seen the x-ray, you don’t really have to carry her?” As one of the doctors at the hospital called out, I only ignored him.

Like a man seeing a sudden revelation, he was stunned when he saw my face, as red as a burning coal. “Please wait here, the surgeon will soon attend to you. Don’t worry, she will be fine.” I knew my face changed his somewhat sarcastic tone. After seeing the surgeon, we got another bomb shell.

“We will need a surgery!” As the surgeon concluded his words, I was shocked and wanted to ask him repeat what he said, ‘a surgery?’ My dad gave me a reaffirming look which I only interpreted as, “yes we heard him right.”

The first challenge was thinking my mother would never walk again and the new one is having her go through a surgery. “Why? Why? Why?” All the questions roaming my head kept giving ideas of how things could go wrong.

I slept days and nights at the hospital as they prepared my mum for surgery and my dad did the same when I had to go to work. On the surgery day, I had no choice than to be at the hospital. I was only glad for one thing through the whole challenge, my mum was happy I was around her all through even though she was in pain.

“Please handle her well!” On several occasions I had shouted at some nurses treating her. It’s hard to see my mother in pain. “Don’t worry sir, she will be fine.” The private hospital has so many matured and polite nurses, who later became my friends.

After the surgery, my mum had to stay still for some days, get some days rest at the hospital, before being discharged. As at when the whole accident occurred, I never knew she would be able to walk again. But I believe our efforts, the surgery and perhaps silent prayers were instrumental to her walking again.

The accident happened in January this year and the surgery was in the same month, to God’s glory she’s done using crutches and sticks, she’s gradually walking, not as before but I am grateful, she could walk again.

A big thanks to @jjmusa2004 for the support through this period, thanks a lot brother.

Health challenges like every troubling situations weighs our emotions down so much that it tells on our physical attributes and reflections to those around us. It was a trying time for you and your family having to face such news even at an hour you should be starting the year on a more positive side.
