Ọba (king ) A Biro Sketch -Tribute to Yoruba Royalty”(154)

Today, I’m excited to share a recent biro sketch I created to honor the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Titled “Ọba” (Which means “king”), this piece captures the grace and dignity of a traditional Yoruba chief, adorned in his royal agbada and beaded crown.

The Process
I started with light biro lines to sketch out the shape of the face and attire. Once I was satisfied with the form, I began building up the shadows with layers of biro stroke lines , I also used small, slant stroke lines for the face and crisp lines for the fabrics. The beads around his neck were the most interesting part for me because it was made with repeated circles  also making it the most rewarding part to ink.

Cultural Meaning
In Yoruba tradition, the king or chief isn't just a political figure , he is a symbol of history, pride, power and ancestral connection. The beaded crown which is called “Ade” in the Yoruba language and elegant agbada robes represent wisdom, leadership, and divine guidance. By sketching this figure, I hoped to preserve and share this legacy through Art. 

Art is a form of preserving our culture and a way of telling historical stories .This is my way of saying, we have not forgotten our roots.”
