I think my wife is the backbone, my daughter the soul - I might be the feet :D When it comes to words, words are just words - it depends on the meaning we apply to them at a personal level and the reaction we have to them when listening. As I see it, the positive and negative weighting is due to attachments we create and then identify with - "mother" to one is a lovely word, to another a knife in the back.
