El sendero llegaba a su fin. La oscura noche tendía su velo, y la quietud del momento me daba escalofríos. Sabía que me observaban. Podía sentir la intensidad de su mirada sobre mí. No podía detenerme ahora. Mi corazón palpitaba a una velocidad atroz.  

—He venido por lo que robaste —dije—. Sé que estás aquí.  

Nada. Solo el tintineo de los pequeños insectos que aún eran valientes como para quedarse hasta el último momento.  

La piel de gallina al sentir su respiración tan cerca me hizo caer. Estaba junto a mí, pero aún así no lograba verlo, pues era capaz de trasladarse a una velocidad descomunal.  

—Así que has venido. ¿Y qué has traído a cambio? —dijo con un gruñido.  

—He escuchado que te gustan los regalos especiales. Yo no he traído un regalo realmente. ¿Cómo puedo regalar algo si es a cambio de algo? Diría más bien que es un intercambio —expresé, mientras el temblor en mi voz apenas me permitía hablar.  

Se acercó esta vez de una forma casi íntima, y entonces sí que sentí el verdadero terror. Cerré los ojos con fuerza. Ese era uno de sus requisitos a la hora del intercambio, y créanme, era lo mejor.  

Incliné la cabeza para que supiera a lo que me refería. Un beso, mi primer beso, a cambio del alma robada de mi hermana pequeña. Valía la pena. Entonces ocurrió. Sentí su aliento sobre el mío, su boca hambrienta, y ese deseo de desvelar todos los misterios era casi adictivo. *"Está ocurriendo"*, pensé. *"Por fin, libres"*. Y entonces, cuando creí que el tiempo había acabado para mí, escuché:

Mi hermana había sido salvada, pero mi capacidad para encontrar el amor verdadero había sido el precio real del pago de su deuda. Creo que un alma no tiene precio, siempre que sea genuina. Por eso, el intercambio valió la pena. Nunca sabré qué o quién era ese monstruo, pero en mi pueblo todos le temen, porque las almas impuras solo logran el sacrificio de quienes quieren salvarlas.

The path was coming to an end. The dark night spread its veil, and the stillness of the moment sent chills down my spine. I knew I was being watched. I could feel the intensity of its gaze upon me. I couldn’t stop now. My heart was pounding at a terrifying speed.  

*"I've come for what you stole,"* I said. *"I know you're here."*  

Nothing. Only the faint chirping of the few brave insects that dared to linger until the very end.  

Goosebumps rose on my skin as I felt its breath too close, making me stumble. It was right beside me, yet I still couldn’t see it—it moved at an unimaginable speed.  

*"So, you’ve come,"* it growled. *"And what have you brought in return?"*  

*"I’ve heard you like special gifts. I haven’t really brought a gift. How can I give something if it’s in exchange for something else? I’d say it’s more of a trade,"* I said, my voice trembling so much I could barely speak.  

This time, it approached me almost intimately, and that’s when I felt true terror. I squeezed my eyes shut. That was one of its conditions for the exchange—and believe me, it was for the best.  

I tilted my head to let it know what I meant. A kiss—my first kiss—in exchange for the stolen soul of my little sister. It was worth it. Then it happened. I felt its breath on mine, its hungry mouth, and that desperate urge to unravel all mysteries was almost addictive. *"It’s happening,"* I thought. *"Finally, free."* And just when I believed my time was up, I heard:  

*"Your debt has been repaid."* Then it vanished into the night.  

My sister’s soul lay there, floating like tiny sparks. It was truly beautiful—so pure, so innocent. In that moment, I didn’t fully grasp what I had just done. My sister had been saved, but my chance to find true love had been the real price for her debt. After all, every bad decision we make has consequences.  

I believe a soul is priceless, as long as it’s genuine. That’s why the trade was worth it. I’ll never know what—or who—that monster was, but in my village, everyone fears it. Because impure souls only bring about the sacrifice of those who try to save them.
