# <center>La literatura es mi segunda pasión</center>   

Hola queridos Hivers, bienvenidos a mi blog. Una vez más me salgo de mi zona de confort. Me bajé de las telas para escribir esta vez sobre un poema muy interesante y con un trasfondo histórico fascinante, y que quiero compartir con ustedes, amantes de la literatura. En este post haré un pequeño resumen de lo que aprendí sobre el cantar de gesta en mis clases de Introducción a las literaturas occidentales II. Espero que les guste y les sea de interés.

Antes de iniciar, considero que es necesario aclarar dos cosas:

-  Quiero hacer enfásis en que es un resumen de lo que he aprendido en mis clases. Si algo amerita fuentes serán debidamente incorporadas, sin embargo, lo demás es mi escritura propia. Aclaro esto para que no hayan señalamientos de plagio. 

-  Sé que hay muchos expertos en historia y literatura dentro del blog, de haber detalles que deseen señalar, desde su experiencia en el área, soy muy receptiva a ello. Siempre y cuando se haga dentro de los límites del respeto y constructividad. Todos fuimos estudiantes alguna vez, y aun después de tener un título en mano, seguimos en constante aprendizaje. Ahora bien, una vez dicho esto, entremos en materia.

# <center>La literatura se trata de leer más allá de lo que está plasmado en la obra</center>   

El poema en específico que quiero compartir con ustedes se llama *El Cantar de Roldán* (si no lo has leído espero que con este post te motives a hacerlo).

Cuando entendí todo lo que había detrás de este poema, sentí que subí a una máquina del tiempo y me trasladé hasta la época de esta maravillosa obra. Ahora quiero invitarte a ti, lector, a acompañarme de nuevo a un viaje por el tiempo.

# <center>Contexto Histórico</center>   

Cuando Roma empieza a decaer como Imperio, todos los fundamentos políticos y territoriales que le caracterizaban sufrieron un grave desbarajuste. Como toda crisis, detonó en el declive económico. Las fronteras de Roma se resquebrajaron, no había quienes custodiaran las entradas a la ciudad. Las invasiones bárbaras desde el norte y el Oriente llegaron al Imperio Romano, y esas personas terminaron asentándose dentro de la ciudad. Al punto que estas tribus, que eran completamente ajenas al Imperio, estaban tan radicados en Roma que ya era imposible expulsarlos; y no hubo más opción que asimilarlos como ciudadanos romanos. 

Lo cual fue muy grave, porque en Roma se empezaron a adoptar culturas que no estaban bajo la jurisdicción romana. Otro problema que atravesaba Roma era la falta de soldados, así que tuvieron que incorporar al ejército soldados de las poblaciones fronterizas, sobretodo germanos. 

Antes de que se pregunten **“¿A dónde vas con toda esta historia?”**  Pues verán, el hecho de que se adoptaran soldados germanos dentro de los ejércitos es un punto clave para entender *El cantar de Roldán.*

> When Rome began to decline as an Empire, all the political and territorial foundations that characterized it suffered a serious disruption. Like all crises, it triggered economic decline. Rome's borders cracked, there was no one to guard the entrances to the city. Barbarian invasions from the north and the East reached the Roman Empire, and these people ended up settling inside the city. To the point that these tribes, who were completely alien to the Empire, were so settled in Rome that it was impossible to expel them; and there was no choice but to assimilate them as Roman citizens. 

>This was very serious, because in Rome they began to adopt cultures that were not under Roman jurisdiction. Another problem that Rome was facing was the lack of soldiers, so they had to incorporate soldiers from the frontier populations, especially Germanic, into the army. 

> Before you ask **"Where are you going with all this story?"** Well, you see, the fact that Germanic soldiers were adopted into the armies is a key point to understand *The Song of Roland.*

# <center>Para entender la literatura, debemos echar un vistazo a la historia</center>   

Lo que vino después, tratando de ser breves, es que los jefes de tribus bárbaras invadieron y derrocaron Roma, lograron conquistarla por la vía militar. Pero no tenían ninguna cultura que imponer, esto era imposible, porque Roma ya era cristiana gracias a Constantino. De modo que estos bárbaros terminaron convirtiéndose en cristianos, y así ya no tuvieron ningún tipo de oposición dentro de Roma, dejaron la vida de nómadas, se asentaron y formaron una corte. El jefe de esa corte era el caudillo miliar, o sea, el señor. El señor tenía a su vez lugartenientes que lo acompañaron durante el mando, éstos serían sus barones, que son sus vasallos. Éste señor repartía las tierras, y así se formó la nobleza europea. 

Lo que quiere decir que son descendientes de bárbaros germanos, que se enseñoriaron; lavaron su origen formando cortes y sistemas de vasallajes, y un sistema de imperio sobre la gente del pueblo. Lo que la gente conocía antes como gobierno ya no existía, quedó fue ése sistema como gobierno, una serie de tribus y jefes de tribus que se habían enseñoriado.  

Todo esto es lo que se conoce como edad oscura. Era oscura porque todo lo que era la unidad político-administrativa se quebrantó. El territorio se ganaba con espadas y la fuerza, y como consecuencia una gran pobreza, hambre y miseria. En todo este contexto el cristinianismo tuvo un rol fundamental, otro aspecto notable en *El cantar de Roldán*. La iglesia era lo único estable que había, se encargaba del orden espiritual y allí la gente encontraba consuelo.

> # <center>To understand literature, we must take a look at history</center>  

> What came later, trying to be brief, is that the barbarian tribal chiefs invaded and overthrew Rome, they managed to conquer it by military means. But they had no culture to impose, this was impossible, because Rome was already Christian thanks to Constantine. So these barbarians ended up becoming Christians, and so they no longer had any kind of opposition within Rome, they left the life of nomads, settled down and formed a court. The head of this court was the military leader, that is, the lord. The lord in turn had lieutenants who accompanied him during the command, these would be his barons, who were his vassals. This lord distributed the lands, and thus the European nobility was formed. 

>This means that they are descendants of Germanic barbarians, who lorded it over; washed their origin by forming courts and systems of vassalage, and a system of empire over the people of the town. What the people knew before as government no longer existed, that system remained as government, a series of tribes and tribal chiefs who had become lording it over them.  

> All this is what is known as the dark ages. It was dark because everything that was the political-administrative unity was broken. Territory was won with swords and force, and as a consequence there was great poverty, hunger and misery. In all this context, Christinianism played a fundamental role, another notable aspect in *El cantar de Roldán*. The church was the only stable thing there was, it was in charge of the spiritual order and there people found comfort.

# <center>Personajes históricos en el poema</center>   

En todo este contexto entra Carlo Magno, quien provenía de una tribu muy influyente: los francos. Él fue uno de los personajes más importantes de la historia Europea y del poema. Otra característica visible en *El cantar de Roldán.* Era analfabeta, como casi todos los reyes y barones de esta época, porque el analfabetismo era una constante en esta sociedad de época oscura. Solo tenían acceso a la educación los monjes. Por esto fue muy importante la literatura oral de este momento. Carlo Magno extendió todo su sacro imperio romano-germánico por toda Europa, menos por España, porque España estaba tomada por los árabes que se habían extendido desde el norte de África y destronaron los reyes visigodos (alemanes).

Los musulmanes para ese entonces eran proclives a la convivencia entre culturas, los cristianos eran los intolerantes. Eran fanáticos religiosos, y esto es lo más notorio en *El cantar de Roldán*. Carlo Magno intentó conquistar España pero no pudo debido al desastre de Roncesvalles (una zona montañosa al norte del pirineo de los aragoneses).

Este es el epicentro del *El Cantar de Roldán*. Roldán es enviado a la retaguardia y es atacado por los árabes en alianza con los vascos. Él, testarudo y orgulloso, dispuesto a entregar su vida y la de los soldados por Francia, la dulce, se niega a tocar el olifante, pese a las insitencias de su gran amigo Oliver. Ya Carlo Magno iba muy adelantado como para socorrerles. La retaguardia es derrotada y la conquista de España fracasó. Lo que quiere decir que Roldán es un personaje histórico, y el evento de Roncesvalles fue un evento sumamente importante en la Edad Media. Este suceso fue difundido por Europa, en forma de canto, era noticia difundida de forma oral.

> In all this context enters Charlemagne, who came from a very influential tribe: the Franks. He was one of the most important characters in European history and in the poem. Another visible characteristic in *The Song of Roland* was illiterate, like almost all the kings and barons of this time, because illiteracy was a constant in this dark age society. Only monks had access to education. This is why the oral literature of this time was very important. Charlemagne extended his entire Roman-Germanic empire throughout Europe, except for Spain, because Spain was taken by the Arabs who had spread from North Africa and dethroned the Visigothic (German) kings. 

> The Muslims at that time were prone to coexistence between cultures, the Christians were the intolerant ones. They were religious fanatics, and this is most notorious in *The Song of Roland*. Charlemagne tried to conquer Spain but could not because of the disaster of Roncesvalles (a mountainous area north of the Aragonese Pyrenees).

> This is the epicenter of *The Song of Roland*. Roland is sent to the rear and is attacked by the Arabs in alliance with the Basques. He, stubborn and proud, ready to give his life and that of the soldiers for France, the sweet, refuses to touch the oliphant, despite the insistence of his great friend Oliver. Already Charlemagne was too far ahead to help them. The rearguard is defeated and the conquest of Spain failed. This means that Roland is a historical character, and the event of Roncesvalles was an extremely important event in the Middle Ages. This event was spread throughout Europe, in the form of a chant, it was news spread orally.

Holaaa...
   Interesante leyenda, la de Roldán. No he leído el libro, pero me ha gustado mucho tu exposición. 
   El personaje de Roldán, me empezó a llamar la atención, cuando estuve en el Valle de Ordesa. Cerca del pico de Monte Perdido está la llamada Brecha de Roldán, a casi 3000m de altura. Un muro de unos 100m alto. Hacia la mitad del muro existe una brecha de unos 40m de ancho.
   Según la leyenda, Roldán, derrotado en Roncesvalles, acabó llegando allí, perseguido por sus enemigos. No podía pasar a Francia debido al obstáculo y a su debilidad, ya que, estaba gravemente herido. Decidió lanzar su espada, Durandarte, para que cayera en terreno natal, lado francés. Hasta tres veces la lanzó, golpeando el muro. A la última consiguió abrir el paso, que lleva su nombre, y morir viendo su tierra amada.
