Hardware and Software Adventures...
Last few weeks it was a struggle to be present online and on HIVE, to engage with others, create regular content, run shows, etc. as offline life was full of events and busier than ever... Most of the things that had to be done are finished slowly, I hope I will get into a more "peaceful" period... On the other side, vacation time is coming, which means that my long road trip will take another chunk of time...

Speaking of things that happened in June, I had another huge, unexpected "operation" on my laptop... During the #HHHLive shows, I noticed that my computer would act weird if I did something during the show... Simple things like opening a web page, or just swapping between tabs in the browser... As my computer isn't that old (I have experience in that field... 😂), it had to be a problem on the software level, and the solution is simple (in theory)... I had to reinstall my operating system... In the last decade, I was using mostly Linux Mint on my computer, but after these issues, I have decided to change it this time...

*My new additions*
</center>

As my "whole life" is on my laptop, whenever I have to do a system re-install, I tend to triple-check everything... Website passwords, email account credentials, bookmarks, etc... I have to-do lists for these things, but every time, something has been forgotten... Lately, I do it by swapping the hard disk (it's not called that anymore, isn't it?), with a new one, without deleting anything from the old one... So, if something goes wrong with the installation, or I need some data fast, I can just change drives and load up the old system! That system also helps with having backups of things for the future, which is crucial if you have important data!

As I had to open up my laptop, I decided to buy another RAM module to pump up the performance... In the photo above, you can see the 16 GB RAM module and PCIe M2 1TB drive that was ready to be installed!

*Old memory*
</center>

Of course, before ordering new equipment, the best thing is to check your current components and be sure that they are compatible with the ones that you want to purchase... In my case, I wanted to add a RAM module, which means that the current one had to be compatible!

<center>
![1719930345529.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ph1102/23tvcWiUGc6HjsJSD3RK1HjzMYdnATFsHeYDrtTzqoMEhxa4JnG438HwXATWTJqbWrFKX.jpg)
*Old M2 SSD*
</center>

As for the M2 drive, I have swapped the old one, with the new one, so the only thing that I had to worry about was the place where it had to fit... You can notice that the old M2 drive is shorter, but the slot is ready for the full-size M2...

Of course, as has happened to me many times, not everything went smoothly with installing the components and with the software installation... 🤦‍ The main issue was that the RAMs didn't want to work together... In the beginning, I was freaking out, but when I was cold-headed I decided to do the ultimate tryout... PRO TIP: **I have swapped the position of memories!!!** Changed places to the old and the new module and it WORKED OUT!

<center>
![1719930345467.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ph1102/23yJEETtZMRLSbdLHZKn4LaAnvKYhu2aVwzVgpcDsEBQd4kTSw76eYrakiMysLzGW5ize.jpg)
*Everything is up and running!*
</center>

Like I said at the beginning, I decided to change the Linux Mint and go with the "original" and more robust solution, so I installed Linux Ubuntu 24.04... My old system wasn't up-to-date, so I decided to install the newest Ubuntu, released less than 2 months ago... and that was another mistake... lol... While new stuff is usually better, they need to *survive the test of time*, and that system hasn't done that yet... Many software apps are not compatible yet (usually they do after a couple of months, so I hope soon), but there is always a way to find similar apps as replacements...

The good side of Linux distributions is that you can (most times) configure them according to your needs... As I'm used to a specific desktop look, I was searching for scripts where I can move panels to the other side, or to add widgets to the desktop, etc. The bad thing about doing that is installing additional scripts that are not always 100% compatible (or have bugs) and can make some unexpected behavior... For example, when my screensaver activates, my desktop icons disappear... 😃

All in all, 99.9% of things work on my new setup and the whole machine works much, much better... It took me a couple of days to set everything up, but I know that I have peace of mind for some time... Many people ask me if it is worth doing it (going to Linux) and going through all the hassle... Well, knowing that my system is much safer than any other OS is enough for me... Especially after having a negative experience with Windows being hacked over a decade ago, which pushed me into the arms of Linux! Thanks, Billy! 😂

PS. This is not an ordinary DIY post, but it could help people who like to get their hands dirty with upgrading their computer!

Thank you for your time.

I never used linux OS, although I have heard from many colleagues about the advantages, especially in terms of security issues... I had a laptop with Linux installed for a short time, but it was not "suitable for use", after two days I returned it 😁

I'm reading your post, so I remembered how long it took me to replace my smartphone.
For me, the phone is probably like a laptop for you, I spend a lot of time on it.
I remember, it took me over 5 hours to copy the data (or remove everything that I didn't need on the new mobile), backup all the applications I use, install all the necessary applications, activate them, log in, restore the application and put everything I need back on the new phone...
How long did you spend fixing your laptop? Although you didn't copy the old HDD, maybe not exactly 5 hours?

Hehehehe... I am embarrassed to say how much time it took... It was probably over 2 days and I was trying to do it asap... 😃 But, I have to say that I was having some very specific issues as I wanted to make it look alike my previous system... So, I had to find additional scripts, test them, replace them, etc. 😃

So... do you do the disk swaps on the desktop or the laptop? That seems like a great idea, but I never opened the inside of a laptop before. Since I have a few dead or almost dead ones, maybe I should get inside one at some point. 😀

I did it on my laptop this time... Usually, I buy a disk rack and use the old disk as a backup/external disc drive...

During those 2-3 days, I think that I opened my laptop like 4-5 times... lol... It has 10-12 screws and it was easy to do it... So, if you have some old laptops, you can experiment, open them, and get familiar with how they look... Get your hands dirty as they are dirty inside... 😂

It looks like a huge mess but at least you replaced it with new hardware. At least you don't have to worry about them having issues unless there were some defective products.

Yeah, it's good that the RAM issue wasn't a big one and that it got solved with swapping modules... In case of RAM failing, sometimes it's very hard to detect it... As it could work for days, and occasionally, reboot the computer... Luckily, this wasn't the case for me...

The monitor is my additional set up dream. I have a few in mind already but they are on my waiting list haha. Linux is superior IMO although now I am using windows because I am learning the way it works. All these times, I was a linux gal and got frustrated at first with windows when I made the switch 8 months ago. I'll make the transition again soon because it is annoying how I can't update stuff from terminal haha

You went from Linux to Windows, and after ONLY 8 months, you are not frustrated anymore? 😃 I tried to do something on my son's Windows, and I just couldn't do it... It has a gazillion things happening at the same time... I can't believe that I will say this, but it got complicated recently, even more than Linux... lol...

Good to see you are all setup now. Linux is supposed to be more fiddly to get it just right, but I think you cant beat it security wise. Since upgrading my ram and harddrive, I dont regret it, so much faster now.

Wow quite a journey!

My (Windows) PC completely died on me a couple of years ago burning out the motherboard, CPU AND ram. That was quite an expensive repair! I wasn't even overclocking it.

Since then no issues at all with either my PC which I use in the studio/for streaming or my laptop (an 8 year old MacBook Pro)

Hmmm... I worked in a PC service for 8-10 years and I had maybe 1 case of "burning" (I mean with smoke and everything... 😂), and I had a lot of weird cases on my desk... lol... Anyway, laptops do need maintenance and cleaning as dust is the biggest enemy... Cleaning computer fans (CPU, GPU, PSU, and MB) could save a couple of years of the computer's life...
When I opened laptops, my CPU fan was 60% full of dust and it is like 2 years old...

That's good advice about cleaning dust - must do that more often and not just the odd time if I upgrade something!

I think I must have been really unlucky with that burnout :(

No doubt brother, it's always a bit of a challenge reinstalling everything, but it's worth it for the performance boost. Linux can be a bit tricky to customize, I myself I'm not too experienced in that particular OS but the security benefits make it worthwhile. Glad to hear your upgrades paid off brother
