I always feel bad when I think I've squashed one. My mind quickly summons memories of childhood surprise and glee watching my Roman Catholic grandmother act out the principles of St. Francis with the chipmunks and squirrels in her yard. She faithfully fed them, even drawing them into her dining room so she could enjoy them up close and personal. Our furry friends.

hiveblocksWhen I was kid, my neighbor rescued a squirrel that had been clipped by a passing car. She was pregnant, and he ended up with a herd of squirrels. The Mother taught her kids that he was safe to go to, and would feed them.
He had squirrels come to him the rest of his life. From one act of compassion, he had years of fun!

I always wondered why he carried a pocket full of pecans, but he never ate them. It was amazing when he finally showed me. He would sit down outside and click to them. The squirrels would come running, and he fed them pecans. One greedy one would get a pecan and run and hide it, then come back for another, ROFLOL! She was fun to watch.
