I don't believe in any sort of afterlife, but I will still do things for others with no expectation of anything in return. We humans can make choices that have nothing to do with our own survival. If we have enough ourselves, then why not help others? I don't crave having lots of possessions. I'd love to see more charities on Steemit. The bonus here is that you can give them something at no cost to yourself. I hope this leads to more good works.
