A crying baby apparently provokes a 'flight or fight' response, alerting parents (and non-parents) to possible danger.</p>\n<p>Check this out: </p>\n<p>Parsons tested whether a baby cry somehow switched on such survival responses by asking volunteers to play a game of <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whac-A-Mole\">whack-a-mole</a>, before and after listening to various sounds including babies, adults and animals in distress.</p>\n<p>\"They were faster and more accurate after listening to the infant vocalisations.
