Firstly the holding pens are normally way too small. </p>\n<p>I can understand when endangered animals are kept for breeding programs but there is no excuse for keeping the others the way they do. </p>\n<p>The last time I went to a zoo i saw a polar bear lying by a pool of water under the African sun. They are from the Arctic and not meant to be sunbathing in 40 degrees. That is very cruel.</p>\n<p>The zoos get away by saying it is educational for the children but then there should be strict regulations on the sizes of pens for all animals. I don't go to zoo's or circuses now and won't let my children see them either. Perhaps a tree frog might not be hindered or bothered by captivity, but how do we know that for sure? </p>\n<p>As far as the animals who harbor a higher intelligence, there is no question of the pain and mental anguish their experiencing. </p>\n<p>I challenge you to gaze into the eye's of a captive elephant.
