One was not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and the other was to be fruitful and multiply.
\n
At the time, Adam and Eve lived in a state of innocence. They were childlike in the sense that they did not know good from evil. They did not have experience with either. In such a state, they would have lived potentially forever that way, and would have never been able to fulfill or accomplish the other commandment of bringing children into the world.
\n
God very much wanted them to bring children into the world. That is an essential part of His plan for all of us. He also wanted them to discern good from evil. By setting up the two laws, and it so being that the one (replenishing the earth) could not be accomplished without breaking the other (eating of the fruit), Adam and Eve had to make a choice. And they chose knowledge over ignorance, and life over death.
\n
For whatever reason, perhaps because God is a perfect being and thus does not create beings of imperfection (we do that), Adam and Eve had to a) learn the difference between good and evil, and the way to do that was to consume the fruit, and b) having sinned or transgressed one of God's laws, become fallen, thus plunging the world from a paradisiacal state to a place where physical and spiritual death were introduced, and where children could be born.
\n
In the process, opposites, and opposition, which didn't really exist in any form up until The Fall, were introduced. Because they knew sorrow and pain, they could understand and more fully feel joy and pleasure. Because they had to sustain themselves by the sweat of their brow, rather than having a life sustaining garden, they were able to grow stronger, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Because they fell, they could make the conscious and willful choice to follow God, something they were incapable of doing before.
\n
So, in giving the commandments, God made it possible for Adam and Eve to actually become fully aware of both, and also have the agency or free will to choose between the two.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p3kfuhyyq","appParentAuthor":"alaisguineasis","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

And God is well aware of good and evil, and so if we are like him, we will definitely be aware of good and evil.

The symbolism in the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is the need for us too be totally dependent on God. God knows all, and he told Adam and Eve to do what he knew was best for them but they felt they can rely on their own understanding.

The consequences of relying on our own understanding is what humanity is still facing until today, chaos , bloodshed and suffering.

God doesn't desire that we be left in the dark because we are told that when Christ is revealed, we shall be like Him.

Angels were created with free will and the knowledge of good and evil. Neither had a problem with nudity.
\n
Now lets look at God's admonition about the apple. He said that the moment that Adam and Eve ate from it; they were sure to die.
\n
Adam and Eve ate the apple. They then perceived their naked form as evil. They were ashamed and covered themselves with fig leaves.
\n
Because Adam and Eve started perceiving things in terms of good and evil they threw themselves out of a state of grace.
\n
In this chain of thought, when Adam and Eve ate the apple and began seeing things in terms of good and evil they could no longer live in the Garden of Eden.
\n
So, it was the act of eating the apple (ie perceiving things as a dichotomy between good and evil) that threw the couple out of the garden.
\n
I think that the story is a little more profound than the moral tale about how God gave Adam and Eve a commandment. They failed to obey the commandment and were punished.
\n
Our choosing to see things as a dichotomy between good and evil made it impossible to live in a state of grace.
\n
As for your question. There may be other ways to view the universe. This was a theme in CS Lewis. Perhaps there are other choices that Adam and Eve could have chosen. There might be other ways to perceive the world, but we are living the consequences of how our ancestors chose to perceive the world.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p3kfuhyyq","appParentAuthor":"alaisguineasis","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
