To be a psychopath is like being the only sentient being on the planet. To them, all the rest are like extremely sophisticated toys, non-living things that don't feel anything that one can exploit however one wishes with no compunction whatsoever.
\n
Psychopaths are amoral maximizers of self-interest. They have no conscience. Not only are their moral sentiments absent but they also have generally stunted affects. They live in a constant state of boredom. Their fear reactions are reduced. Punishments have very little to no effect on psychopaths. The only way to modify the behavior of psychopaths even a small extent is through rewards.
\n
The smartest and the less severe ones learn to mask their nature in order to survive in the world. They are habitual liars and manipulators who do not care about anyone but themselves. Their goals in life is the purely selfish maximization of benefit and pleasure such as money, power, and sex. They are reckless, dangerous, callous and amoral despite whatever superficial charm they may possess.
\n
No, they do not experience the joy of giving, empathy, attachment or any other normal pro-social emotions most people are capable of feeling. Their minds are far outside of normal. I've always likened psychopaths, in a way, to lizards occupying a human body and possessing human-level intelligence without certain key socio-emotional modules that are essential to the full human experience. If I meet and recognize a psychopath, what I feel towards them is a mixture of fear and disgust like toward a crocodile on a muddy riverbank.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p35bwjna5","appParentAuthor":"ologi","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
