What do people misunderstand about gaining muscle?
I’m going to give you a very direct answer first and then point out some additional concepts which I think are commonly misunderstood.

It can take quite awhile to build a body that you are proud of and also build up to impressive amounts of strength.

It quite simply doesn’t work like that. You have to remember that adding muscle is an adaptation that your body quite simply DOES NOT WANT TO MAKE. Muscle is metabolically expensive (it’s tough for your body to justify carrying it around), and as a result it is DIFFICULT to build.

The most misunderstood idea is TIME.

STRONG FROM HEAD TO TOE

I prefer to engage yourself to Full Body Training for Extreme Fitness

You need to ensure that you are providing a significant stimulus through working out, and then recovering with adequate calories and relaxation.

And you need to repeat this process over and over and OVER again.

Now, what are some other misunderstood concepts?

Power: In gym you need to work hard. More specifically, you need to work VERY HARD for short periods of time. Fooling around in the gym will not give you the results that you want.
Developing Overload: There is no need to overload and most people only think of progressive overload in terms of weight, but perhaps an equally important idea is to continue to progress in terms of execution, or how you are performing an exercise.
Engage with Certain Exercises: You must be engage with different exercises and many people think that the ‘bench press’ is a great chest-builder for EVERYONE. That’s just simply not true, and it’s based on your sternal angle and other aspects of your physiology. The bench press can allow some guys to build a big chest, and others not.
