There are cases of people in the city going off the grid but you are limited to how much off the grid you really are. It is possible if you have a decent sized property like a small holding in the countryside.
\n
These days technology regarding solar panels and wind turbines have given us new hope to get away from monthly bills. I have looked at what I would need as our electricity bill is rising by 15% a year. It has got to the point that if I install a $20 000 solar kit it will last me 15 years and will save me a fortune.
\n
Water is an issue and this is why I said where you live. If you are in the countryside it is easier as you could have more than one water source. Boreholes are fine depending on how much ground water is available. A friend lives near a mountain range and he has a natural spring that has never dried up in over 60 years. Once you can harvest your own water you are nearly there.
\n
Grow your own crops that will give you enough food for the year. Obviously in the countryside this would be a lot easier and depending how much off the grid you want to go.Animals are a must to give you eggs, milk and meat. If you are in an area that allows hunting that would be a bonus.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pkflduh95","appParentAuthor":"bjornb","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

json_metadata | "{"app":"Musing","appTags":["Life","technology"],"appCategory":"Life","appTitle":"Can one go totally of the grid? How?","appBody":"
CAN ONE GET TOTALLY OFF THE GRID?
\n
Yes, with planning, some upfront costs, and perhaps some sacrifices, one can get totally off the grid.
\n
Generally, when one talks about getting totally off the grid, they mean:
\n
—Get off the public utility grids, as in electric, water and sewer
\n
—Grow and prepare most of their food and provide as much of their shelter, clothing, etc., as possible
\n
—Become trackless: no credit or bank cards of any kind, no traceable internet, cell or land line communication
\n
—Use cash or something of recognizable worth such as gold or silver, and then have other things of value to barter with
\n
ENERGY/UTILITY GRIDS
\n
This is perhaps where the most advances in technology have been made in recent years because of the push by various elements of governments around the world to transition from fossil fuels to alternative forms of energy.
\n
Solar panels, small wind turbines, even hydrogen systems have been designed to facilitate getting off the energy grid. All of these have their limits, however. Solar energy needs to be first stored and then converted into usable electricity, which generally means batteries and a converter device. Solar panels are now more efficient, but generally are still supplemental rather than full replacements for electricity except for perhaps the sunniest climbs. Energy generation via wind is less efficient, as the wind needs to maintain a certain speed in order to create the power. Hydrogen systems are still very expensive, and potentially very volatile if not installed and maintained correctly.
\n
Propane gas is also a potential form of energy as outdoor camping equipment will run off of it, including lamps for light and heat.
\n
Water is very important, but can be resolved through a well, which means a person will need to live in an area without a city water or sewer line, or have permission to be on a well. Likewise for a septic tank. Acquiring a well and septic tank can be relatively easy to do with money, of course.
\n
Since this is probably going to be a step by step process, rather than something someone does in their current situation, purchasing land, or finding a home that is already set up off the grid as far as energy and utilities are concerned will need to happen first.
\n
FOOD/CLOTHING/SHELTER
\n
While buying the land, it would be good to have enough room to grow a good-sized garden, preferably somewhere with more than one growing season, or where a greenhouse might be an option. The crops grown will need good soil, plenty of sunlight and lots of water available, along with fertilizers or composts, the more natural and readily available, the better.
\n
In addition to fruits and vegetables, this might mean also livestock of some kind, depending on one's eating needs. Chickens for meat and eggs (as well as fertilizer), and perhaps sheep for meat and wool. Or alpacas for their wool and looking over the livestock. Essentially, one will be homesteading, and how large an operation one has will depend on how much one can afford to do, and what one wants to do.
\n
UNTRACEABLE
\n
No more bank accounts or credit cards. No more smartphones—at least not with cell coverage—and either one will be relying on public WiFi and hotspots, or potentially be able to join a peer-to-peer or mesh network. The latter is still in various developmental stages, so speeds may not be what someone will be accustomed to and available use may be limited. Getting on the internet without going through an internet provider is one of the few things that has been slow to develop.
\n
So, internet time may suffer the most. Voice and text communication may, too, depending on one's circumstances. There may be other technologies available to help with communications and internet.
\n
CASH/PRECIOUS METALS/BARTERING
\n
The last part of getting off the grid entirely is to adopt one or more monetary systems with which to acquire things that one cannot make or doesn't have as a resource. This will probably mean setting up some kind of human network, or becoming part of an existing one, where one can offer some kind of product or service to get a product or service. The more useful one is in this network, the better.
\n
Cash, gold, and silver will only go so far. Bartering with in demand and renewable products or repeatable services will be most advantageous. Since this is something a person will need to plan for, figuring out what those products and services are well in advance is pretty much essential to successfully getting off the grid.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pkflduh95","appParentAuthor":"bjornb","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
